DECESSO DEL COMMENDATORE EMERITO DELLA GRAN COMMENDA DEL CASTELLO A MALTA E CUSTODE DEL CASTELLO MAGISTRALE

S.E. il Cavaliere Gerry Maidens, GCLJ KCLJ KMLJ, si è spento il 16 giugno 2025.

Era divenuto Commendatore della Gran Commenda del Castello a Malta nel 2011 e subito lanciò un'iniziativa per attrarre membri più giovani, in modo da garantire il futuro della Gran Commenda e, al contempo, raggiungere una maggiore massa per raccogliere fondi per beneficenza. Fu compiuto un serio tentativo di rendere la Gran Commenda più attraente per i cittadini maltesi, un'iniziativa che ha notevolmente giovato al mix di culture tra i suoi membri. La Gran Commenda fu concepita come un ente cristiano-ecumenico e internazionale.

Nel 2015 il numero degli iscritti era salito a oltre 90.

Fu istituito un Comitato per il Patrimonio, presieduto dal Cavaliere Carmel Bonello, per consentire l'accesso alla Gran Commenda ai giovani (la piena appartenenza all'Ordine non è possibile per i minori di 30 anni). Nell'ambito di quella che si rivelò un'iniziativa preziosa, furono organizzati eventi e attività, con il reclutamento di diversi nuovi membri. Questo programma è ancora oggi molto popolare. In questo periodo, la Gran Commenda non solo continuò ad assistere le Donne Bisognose (WIN) in India, ma si dedicò anche all'assistenza dei lebbrosi a Kagando, in Uganda, seguendo i consigli e le richieste di aiuto dell'infermiera consulente, la signora Rita Miller.

Nel 2013, in occasione del 40° anniversario dell'ingresso del Castello nell'Ordine, il Gran Maestro S.E. Don Carlos Gereda de Borbon, Marchese di Almazan presiedette una grande cerimonia di investitura tenutasi presso la Pro-cattedrale anglicana di San Paolo a La Valletta.

Nel 2015, la carica di Commendatore è stata trasferita al Cav. Carmel Bonello. S.E. Cav. Gerry Maidens è diventato Commendatore Emerito e Custode del Castello, e come tale aveva un seggio ufficiale nel Gran Consiglio Magistrale dell'Ordine.

Nel 2018, per i suoi servizi all'Ordine, il Cavaliere Gerry Maidens è stato elevato a Cavaliere di Gran Croce dal 50° e attuale Gran Maestro, S.A.S. Don Francisco de Borbon von Hardenberg, durante la sua visita a Malta.

DEATH OF THE COMMENDATORE EMERITUS OF THE GRAND COMMANDERY OF THE CASTLE IN MALTA AND CUSTODIAN OF THE MAGISTRAL CASTLE

H.E. Chev. Gerry Maidens, GCLJ KMLJ, passed away on 16 June 2025.

He had become a Commander of the Grand Commandery of the Castle in Malta in 2011 and immediately launched an initiative to attract younger members, so as to secure the future of the Grand Commandery and, at the same time, reach a greater mass to raise funds for charity. A serious attempt was made to make the Grand Commandery more attractive to Maltese citizens, an initiative that greatly benefited the mix of cultures among its members. The Grand Commandery was conceived as a Christian-ecumenical and international body.

By 2015, the number of members had risen to over 90.

A Heritage Committee, chaired by Chev. Carmel Bonello, was set up to allow young people access to the Grand Commandery (full membership is not possible for those under the age of 30). As part of what proved to be a valuable initiative, events and activities were organised, and several new members were recruited. This programme is still very popular today. During this time, the Grand Commandery not only continued to assist Women in Need (WIN) in India, but also dedicated itself to assisting lepers in Kagando, Uganda, following the advice and requests for help from the nurse consultant, Mrs Rita Miller.

In 2013, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Castle's entry into the Order, Grand Master H.E. Don Carlos Gereda de Borbon, Marquis of Almazan presided over a grand investiture ceremony held at the Anglican Pro-Cathedral of St. Paul in Valletta.

In 2015, the office of Commendatore was transferred to Chev. Carmel Bonello. H.E. Chev. Gerry Maidens became Commendatore Emeritus and Keeper of the Castle, and as such had an official seat on the Grand Magistral Council of the Order.

In 2018, for his services to the Order, Chev. Gerry Maidens was elevated to Knight of the Grand Cross by the 50th and current Grand Master, H.S.H. Don Francisco de Borbon von Hardenberg, during his visit to Malta.
