Il 12 maggio 1973 il Castello Lanzun, o it-Torri ta' Lanzun come è conosciuto a Malta, è stato formalmente inaugurato dall'allora Gran Maestro, S.E. Don Francisco de Borbón y Borbón, come sede ufficiale mondiale dell'Ordine di San Lazzaro e anche come sede di quella che oggi è la Gran Commenda del Castello, una giurisdizione ecumenica e internazionale dell'Ordine con sede a Malta.

Con l'aumento dei membri e delle donazioni, la giurisdizione è stata elevata a Gran Commenda dal 49° Gran Maestro, S.E. Don Carlos Gereda de Borbón, Marchese di Almazán, che ne è diventato il primo Gran Commendatore.

Nell'ottobre 2018 gli è succeduto l'attuale Gran Maestro S.A.S. Don Francisco de Borbón Graf von Hardenberg-Fürstenberg, per continuare una tradizione che risale a mezzo secolo fa.

Costruita nel XVIII secolo, It-Torri ta' Lanzun sorge ai margini di quello che in origine era un piccolo borgo chiamato "Mensija", che in maltese significa "il dimenticatoio" o "il luogo abbandonato".

Il piano terra è composto da una sala d'ingresso, una cappella ecumenica dedicata a San Lazzaro e un cortile centrale. La sala più grande è stata opportunamente trasformata nella Sala dei Cavalieri, decorata con numerosi ornamenti araldici. La maggior parte degli eventi di beneficenza si tengono nella Sala dei Cavalieri nei mesi freddi o nel Cortile durante i mesi estivi.

Al primo piano si trova la Sala del Consiglio della Gran Commenda, che conduce alla Sala degli Archivi dell'Ordine. Un pennone con una croce verde a otto punte adorna la parte superiore di questo raro esempio di fattoria fortificata.

L'acquisizione di Torri Lanzun è stata la prima volta che l'Ordine di San Lazzaro ha potuto ristabilire una sede permanente da quando è stato espropriato a seguito della Rivoluzione francese.

Torri Lanzun è a disposizione di tutti i membri dell'Ordine e può essere visitata da chi lo desidera su appuntamento.

On 12th May 1973, Castello Lanzun, or it-Torri ta’ Lanzun as it is known in Malta, was formally opened by the then Grand Master, H.E. Don Francisco de Borbón y Borbón, as the official worldwide headquarters of the Order of St Lazarus and also as the home of what is now the Grand Commandery of the Castello, a Malta-based, ecumenical and international jurisdiction of the Order.

Eventually as membership and charitable giving increased, the jurisdiction was elevated to the level of Grand Commandery by the late 49th Grand Master, H.E. Don Carlos Gereda de Borbón, Marquis of Almazán who became its first Grand Commander.

In October 2018, he was succeeded by the current Grand Master H.S.H. Don Francisco de Borbón Graf von Hardenberg, to continue a tradition going back half a century.

Built in the 18th Century, it-Torri ta’ Lanzun, stands at the edge of what was originally a small hamlet called ‘Mensija’, which in Maltese means ‘the forgotten’ or ‘the abandoned place’.

The ground floor consists of an Entrance Hall, an ecumenical Chapel dedicated to St Lazarus, and a central Courtyard. The largest room has been appropriately converted into the Knights' Hall decorated with a number of heraldic adornments. Most charitable fund raising events are held in the Knights’ Hall in the cold months or in the Courtyard during the summer months.

On the first floor is the Grand Commandery’s Council Chamber which leads into the Order’s Archives Room. A flagpole with a green eight-pointed cross adorns the top part of this rare example of a fortified farmhouse.

The acquisition of Torri Lanzun was the first time that the Order of St Lazarus was able to re-establish a permanent headquarters since it was dispossessed as a result of the French Revolution.

Torri Lanzun is available to all Members of the Order and can also be visited by appointment.
