DELEGAZIONE DEL GRAN BALIATO DI SICILIA AL SOLENNE PONTIFICALE PER I 400 ANNI DELLA ISTITUZIONE DELLA FESTA DEL CROCEFISSO A MONREALE

Una delegazione del Gran Baliato di Sicilia, guidata dal Luogotenente Generale avv. Pietro Luigi Matta, KLJ, ha partecipato domenica 3 maggio 2026, a Monreale, al solenne pontificale per le celebrazioni dei 400 anni della istituzione della festa del Crocefisso come patrono della città, presieduto da Sua Eminenza Marcello Semeraro, Cardinale diacono di Santa Maria in Domnica alla Navicella e Prefetto del Dicastero delle Cause dei Santi, concelebrato dall'arcivescovo Gualtiero Isacchi, ECLJ, e da altri sacerdoti della città.

La Festa del Santissimo Crocefisso di Monreale è una delle feste religiose più sentite in Sicilia, le cui origini risalgono al XVII secolo. Questa storica celebrazione ebbe origine dopo che una serie di eventi miracolosi suscitarono una profonda devozione per un Crocifisso ligneo, che secondo la tradizione avrebbe avuto il potere di proteggere la città da pestilenze e calamità.

L'arcivescovo spagnolo Girolamo Venero istituì ufficialmente la Festa del Santissimo Crocifisso nel 1626 d.C. come atto votivo. Nel corso dei secoli, l'evento si è trasformato: un tempo caratterizzato da solenni processioni religiose, ora include fiere, spettacoli musicali e fuochi d'artificio, pur onorando le sue radici sacre. Ancora oggi la leggenda secondo cui "U Crucifissu nun dormi" (in dialetto siciliano il crocifisso non dorme mai) è viva tra gli abitanti del luogo, a testimonianza della credenza che il Santissimo Crocifisso continui a vegliare su Monreale.

DELEGATION FROM THE GRAND BAILIWICK OF SICILY AT THE SOLEMN PONTIFICAL MASS FOR THE 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FEAST OF THE CRUCIFIX IN MONREALE

A delegation from the Grand Bailiwick of Sicily, led by Lieutenant General Pietro Luigi Matta, KLJ, participated in the solemn pontifical mass in Monreale on Sunday, May 3, 2026, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the Feast of the Crucifix as the city's patron saint. The mass was presided over by His Eminence Marcello Semeraro, Cardinal Deacon of Santa Maria in Domnica alla Navicella and Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, and concelebrated by Archbishop Gualtiero Isacchi, ECLJ, and other priests of the city.

The Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix of Monreale is one of the most deeply felt religious festivals in Sicily, with origins dating back to the 17th century. This historic celebration originated after a series of miraculous events sparked a deep devotion to a wooden crucifix, which, according to tradition, had the power to protect the city from plagues and calamities.

The Spanish Archbishop Girolamo Venero officially established the Feast of the Holy Crucifix in 1626 AD as a votive act. Over the centuries, the event has evolved: once characterized by solemn religious processions, it now includes fairs, musical performances, and fireworks, while still honoring its sacred roots. Even today, the legend that "U Crucifissu nun dormi" (in Sicilian dialect, the crucifix never sleeps) is still alive among the locals, testifying to the belief that the Holy Crucifix continues to watch over Monreale.
