IL PATRIARCA DELLA CHIESA ORTODOSSA BULGARA SUA SANTITA’ NEOFIT E’ TORNATO ALLA CASA DEL PADRE

Nella tarda serata di ieri, mercoledì 13 marzo, dopo una lunga malattia, all’età di 78 anni è morto Sua Santità Neofit, patriarca della Chiesa ortodossa bulgara e metropolita di Sofia (1945-2024).

Neofit era stato eletto a capo della Chiesa ortodossa bulgara il 25 febbraio 2013. È stato il terzo patriarca consecutivo della Bulgaria. Nato in un'umile famiglia di credenti, il suo nome era Simeon Dimitrov. All'età di 14 anni era entrato nel Seminario Teologico di Sofia presso la stazione di Cherepish, per poi proseguire presso l'Accademia Teologica "St. Clemente Ohridski". La sua più grande era il canto in chiesa, sul quale si è specializzato a Mosca. A 30 anni ha preso i voti monastici nel monastero di Troyan con il nome di Neofit. Dieci anni dopo, è diventato il secondo vicario del metropolita di Sofia e patriarca di Bulgaria, Maxim.

Negli ambienti ecclesiastici, ancor prima di essere metropolita, Neofit veniva definito come una persona dotata di una mente acuta e di un carattere gentile. Le sue capacità diplomatiche sono state presto notate nella Chiesa. Nel corso degli anni, Neofit è stato direttore del coro dei Sacerdoti di Sofia, rettore dell'Accademia Teologica e segretario capo del Santo Sinodo durante lo scisma nella Chiesa. In quegli anni ha avuto un ruolo importante nelle trattative per la liberazione del Palazzo Sinodale occupato.

Nel 1994 è stato eletto metropolita di Dorostol e Cherven e nel 2001 la diocesi è stata divisa, così Neofit è diventato vescovo di Russe. ll 24 febbraio 2013, è stato eletto patriarca della Chiesa ortodossa bulgara.

Nel maggio 2019, il patriarca ha incontrato Papa Francesco durante la sua visita apostolica in Bulgaria.

THE PATRIARCH OF THE BULGARIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH HIS HOLINESS NEOFIT HAS RETURNED TO FATHER'S HOUSE

Late yesterday evening, Wednesday 13 March, after a long illness, His Holiness Neofit, Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and Metropolitan of Sofia (1945-2024) died at the age of 78.

Neofit had been elected head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church on 25 February 2013. He was the third consecutive Patriarch of Bulgaria. Born into a humble family of believers, his name was Simeon Dimitrov. At the age of 14, he entered the Theological Seminary in Sofia at Cherepish, and then continued at the St. Clement Ohridski Theological Academy. His greatest was church singing, on which he specialised in Moscow. At the age of 30, he took monastic vows in the Troyan monastery under the name Neofit. Ten years later, he became the second vicar of the Metropolitan of Sofia and Patriarch of Bulgaria, Maxim.

In church circles, even before he was metropolitan, Neofit was described as someone with a sharp mind and a gentle character. His diplomatic skills were soon noticed in the Church. Over the years, Neofit was director of the Sofia Priests' Choir, rector of the Theological Academy and chief secretary of the Holy Synod during the schism in the Church. During those years, he played an important role in the negotiations for the liberation of the occupied Synodal Palace.

In 1994, he was elected Metropolitan of Dorostol and Cherven and in 2001 the diocese was divided, so Neofit became Bishop of Russe. On 24 February 2013, he was elected Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

In May 2019, the Patriarch met Pope Francis during his apostolic visit to Bulgaria.
