MESSAGGIO DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIASTICO IN OCCASIONE DELL'ASSUNZIONE DELLE FUNZIONI

Gran Priore Ecclesiastico

Miei cari Fratelli e Sorelle,

Sabato 25 gennaio, Festa della Conversione di San Paolo, il Gran Maestro del nostro Ordine mi insedierà come nuovo Gran Priore Ecclesiastico, avendo prima promesso di adempiere ai doveri di tale Ufficio con l'aiuto di Dio. Sono lieto che ciò avvenga in concomitanza con l'investitura dei nuovi membri del Gran Baliato di Sicilia, in un grande raduno nella Chiesa Cattedrale di Monreale.

Nell'ordine liturgico, dopo che il Gran Maestro mi avrà dichiarato Gran Priore Ecclesiastico, scambierò immediatamente il bacio di pace con il mio predecessore, e ora Gran Priore Emerito, il Reverendissimo Mons. Michele Pennisi, che è stato naturalmente Arcivescovo di Monreale fino al 2022. Poi mi presenterà formalmente alla comunità riunita. Questo è sicuramente un bel segno di continuità e dell'amore reciproco che dovrebbe caratterizzare il nostro Ordine ecumenico, anche perché sono il primo vescovo anglicano ad essere nominato a questo ministero.

Forse saprete che la Cattedrale è dedicata alla Natività di Nostra Signora. Per me questo è un'ulteriore gioia. La devozione alla Nostra Santa Madre ha un posto così importante nella mia vita devozionale, e ho confidato nelle sue preghiere e nel suo amore durante il mio ormai lungo ministero di sacerdote e vescovo. Inoltre, sono stato per sei anni direttore episcopale del Santuario anglicano di Nostra Signora di Walsingham qui in Inghilterra, un luogo sacro che attira cattolici, anglicani e protestanti in pellegrinaggio. Durante il mio periodo lì, il nostro Ordine ha tenuto uno dei suoi pellegrinaggi internazionali al Santuario. Lo spirito ecumenico del nostro Ordine deve sicuramente rendere la Madonna molto felice. Ha un solo Figlio e certamente desidera ardentemente che il suo Corpo, la Chiesa, manifesti questa Unità e testimoni così il suo desiderio che il mondo intero sia trascinato nella Comunione con Lui.

Con il passare del tempo, non vedo l'ora di conoscere sempre di più la vita internazionale e l'opera caritativa del nostro Ordine. Nel frattempo, vorrei chiedere le vostre preghiere il 25, quando inizierò questa nuova opera; per tutti coloro che si riuniranno in quella grande Cattedrale quel giorno, e per la benedizione di Dio sulla nostra vita e sul nostro ministero insieme.

MESSAGE FROM THE GRAND ECCLESIASTICAL PRIOR ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ASSUMPTION OF FUNCTIONS

Ecclesiastical Grand Prior

My dear Brothers and Sisters,                                                                                   

On Saturday 25th January, the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul the Grand Master of our Order will instal me as the new Ecclesiastical Grand Prior, I having first promised to fulfil the duties of that Office with the help of God. I am delighted that this will take place alongside the investiture of new members of the Grand Bailiwick of Sicily at a great gathering in the Cathedral Church at Monreale.

In the Order of the liturgy, after the Grand Master declares me to be the Ecclesiastical Grand Prior, I will immediately exchange the kiss of peace with my predecessor, and now Grand Prior Emeritus, the Most Reverend Msgr. Michele Pennisi, who was of course the Archbishop of Monreale until 2022. He will then formally present me to the assembled company. This is surely a lovely sign of continuity, and of the mutual love that should be a mark of our ecumenical Order, not least since I am the first Anglican bishop to be appointed to this ministry.

You will perhaps know that the Cathedral is dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady. For me this provides an added joy. Devotion to Our Holy Mother has such an importance place in my own devotional life, and I have trusted to her prayers and love throughout my now quite long ministry as a priest and bishop. More than that, I was for six years the episcopal director of the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham here in England, a holy place that draws Catholic, Anglican and Protestants in pilgrimage. During my time there, our own Order held one of its International Pilgrimages to the Shrine. The ecumenical spirit of our Order must surely give Our Lady much happiness. She has only one Son and surely longs for his Body the Church to manifest that Oneness and so bear witness to his desire that the whole world be drawn into Communion with him.

As time goes by, I look forward to getting to know more and more of the international life and charitable work of our Order. In the meantime, may I ask your prayers on the 25th as I begin this new work; for all those who will gather in that great Cathedral on that day, and for God’s blessing on our life and ministry together.
