MESSAGGIO DI CAPODANNO 2022 DEL Gran BALì DI SICILIA dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle,

si chiude un altro anno vissuto nell’alternarsi di speranza e sconforto caratterizzato dal protrarsi dell’emergenza pandemica COVID 19 che credevamo di esserci lasciati alle spalle e che, negli ultimi giorni, sembra essersi riacutizzata con una violenza inaspettata.

La natura sembra volerci ricordare ancora una volta ciò che è scritto nel libro del Levitico: «Le terre non si potranno vendere per sempre, perché la terra è mia e voi siete presso di me come forestieri e inquilini» (Lv, 25, 23). Certo, questo non significa che l’uomo sia succube della terra e della vita; egli, per l’appunto, è chiamato ad intervenire su di esse, è chiamato a prendere l’iniziativa e a «coltivare», ma in un certo senso deve compiere un simile gesto - ecco in che cosa consiste la cifra stessa dell’umano - da forestiero e da inquilino, cioè sapendo anche «custodire».

Papa Francesco richiama la nostra attenzione sul fatto che «Noi non siamo Dio. La terra ci precede e ci è stata data» (Laudato si’, 67); insomma, ammesso e non concesso che ci sia un padrone, ammesso e non concesso che la logica del potere e del possesso sia sufficiente per leggere e interpretare il mistero dell’esistenza e della vita, questo padrone non può che essere Dio: l’uomo è un amministratore che riceve e che deve riconsegnare, tra l’altro e ancora una volta - è un tratto fondamentale del logos biblico – non tanto e non solo a Dio (in fondo Egli non ha bisogno di nulla: Dio, creando, ha donato la vita, non l’ha semplicemente prestata) quanto piuttosto agli altri uomini e soprattutto agli ultimi tra gli uomini.

Ma l’uomo, come sovente nella sua storia, è portato a rimuovere tutto ciò che gli ricorda la sua piccolezza e, quando la ragione si addormenta, si inebria del suo io e persegue disegni di effimera gloria, ergendosi a signore della vita e della morte, fino a quando quest’ultima non gli ricorda che anche è polvere ed è destinato a tornare nella polvere.

L’augurio che rivolgo a me stesso ed a Voi tutti è, pertanto, che l’esperienza che stiamo vivendo ci sia di sprone nel prendere coscienza della nostra pochezza e del comune destino che ci unisce come figli di un solo Padre e, per chi come noi è stato chiamato a seguire il Vangelo sotto la bandiera e con il carisma dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro, di sapere riconoscere negli ultimi i propri fratelli maggiori, operando ogni giorno per l’unità visibile della Chiesa di Cristo: Ut Unum sint!

NEW YEAR'S EVE 2022 MESSAGE OF THE GRAND BAILIFF OF SICILY OF THE MILITARY AND HOSPITALLER ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

another year is drawing to a close, one that has been characterised by alternating hope and discouragement due to the continuation of the COVID 19 pandemic emergency, which we thought we had left behind and which, in recent days, seems to have flared up again with unexpected violence.

Nature seems to want to remind us once again of what is written in the book of Leviticus: "The land cannot be sold forever, for the land is mine, and you are with me as strangers and tenants" (Lev 25:23). Of course, this does not mean that man is a slave to the land and to life; he is called to intervene in them, he is called to take the initiative and to "cultivate", but in a certain sense he must carry out such a gesture - this is where the very essence of the human consists - as a stranger and as a tenant, that is, knowing how to "guard" as well.

Pope Francis draws our attention to the fact that "We are not God. The earth precedes us and has been given to us" (Laudato si', 67); in short, granted and not granted that there is a master, granted and not granted that the logic of power and possession is sufficient to read and interpret the mystery of existence and life, this master can only be God: man is a steward who receives and has to give back, among other things and once again - it is a fundamental feature of the biblical logos - not so much and not only to God (after all He does not need anything: God, by creating, gave life, not simply lent it) but rather to other men and especially to the least among men.

But man, as so often in his history, is inclined to remove everything that reminds him of his littleness and, when reason falls asleep, he becomes inebriated with his ego and pursues designs of ephemeral glory, setting himself up as lord of life and death, until the latter reminds him that he too is dust and is destined to return to dust.

My wish for myself and for all of you, therefore, is that the experience we are going through may encourage us to become aware of our own smallness and of the common destiny that unites us as children of one Father, and for those of us who have been called to follow the Gospel under the banner and with the charism of the Order of Saint Lazarus, to know how to recognise our elder brothers and sisters in the least, working every day for the visible unity of the Church of Christ: Ut Unum sint!
