MESSAGGIO DI NATALE 2023 DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIASTICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME

Eccellenze, confratelli e consorelle dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

quest’anno ricorre l’Ottocentesimo anniversario della creazione del primo presepio vivente da parte di San Francesco di Assisi a Greggio. Il 25 dicembre del 1223 giunsero a Greccio molti frati da varie parti e arrivarono anche uomini e donne dai casolari della zona, portando fiori e fiaccole per illuminare quella santa notte. Arrivato Francesco, trovò nella greppia con il fieno, un bambino, il bue e l’asinello. La gente accorsa manifestò una gioia indicibile davanti alla scena del Natale.

Se ci lasciamo raggiungere da questo messaggio, anche noi, come i pastori e i magi, veniamo investiti da una grande gioia, che ci fa superare le nostre paure e ci dà la certezza che anche il dolore più atroce può diventare luogo dell’amore, pure l’abisso della nostra miseria può accogliere la misericordia, e finanche la disperazione più nera può tramutarsi nella speranza più ardita. 

Il presepe suscita tanto stupore perché manifesta la tenerezza di Dio, che si è fatto bambino per dirci quanto è vicino ad ogni essere umano, in qualunque condizione si trovi. Il bambino Gesù mostrandosi con la sua debolezza e povertà, non vuole costringere nessuno ad accoglierlo per forza. Egli si fa dono per chiunque vorrà accettarlo.

Mentre contempliamo la scena del Natale, siamo invitati a metterci spiritualmente in cammino, attratti dall’umiltà di Colui che si è fatto uomo per incontrare ogni uomo. E scopriamo che Egli ci ama a tal punto da unirsi a noi, perché anche noi possiamo unirci a Lui.

Questo bambino è l’unico Salvatore del mondo, venuto a liberarci dalla lebbra del peccato, dalla droga dell’egoismo, dal tunnel buio della morte.

Se non prendiamo sul serio il Natale di Cristo rischiamo di ricordare un anniversario e di celebrare una festa senza sapere chi è il festeggiato. Il Natale è una buona notizia di salvezza che riguarda ciascuno di noi

Mentre mi compiaccio del Vostro impegno portato avanti con grande generosità in favore dei lebbrosi e degli altri ammalati, in occasione delle prossime Feste Natalizie auguro a ciascuno di Voi e alle Vostre Famiglie, che ognuno accolga con una grande fede nel suo cuore Gesù Cristo e lo riconosca presente soprattutto nei piccoli e nei poveri, per essere costruttori di un mondo nuovo nel quale regni la giustizia, la solidarietà e la fraternità e la pace.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2023 OF THE GRAND ECCLESIASTICAL PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

Your Excellencies, Brothers and Sisters of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem,

This year marks the eight hundredth anniversary of the creation of the first living nativity scene by St. Francis of Assisi in Greggio. On December 25, 1223, many friars arrived in Greccio from various parts of the world and men and women also arrived from the farmhouses in the area, bringing flowers and torches to illuminate that holy night. When Francis arrived, he found a child, an ox and a donkey in the crib with the hay. The people who came there showed unspeakable joy at the Christmas scene.

If we allow ourselves to be touched by this message, we too, like the shepherds and the Magi, are overwhelmed by a great joy, which makes us overcome our fears and gives us the certainty that even the most atrocious pain can become a place of love, even the abyss of our misery can welcome mercy, and even the blackest despair can be transformed into the most daring hope.

The nativity scene arouses so much amazement because it manifests the tenderness of God, who became a child to tell us how close He is to every human being, in whatever condition they find themselves. The Child Jesus, showing Himself with his weakness and poverty, does not want to force anyone to accept Him by force. He makes himself a gift for anyone who wants to accept Him.

As we contemplate the scene of Christmas, we are invited to set out on our spiritual journey, attracted by the humility of the One who became man in order to encounter every human being. And we discover that He loves us so much that He unites with us, so that we too can unite ourselves to Him.

This child is the only Saviour of the world, who came to free us from the leprosy of sin, from the drug of selfishness, from the dark tunnel of death.

Christmas is the good news of salvation that concerns each one of us. If we do not take Christ's Nativity seriously, we risk remembering an anniversary and celebrating a feast without knowing who the birthday boy is.

While I rejoice in your commitment, carried out with great generosity on behalf of lepers and other sick people, on the occasion of the forthcoming Christmas holidays I hope that each one of you and your families will welcome Jesus Christ with great faith in their heart, and recognize Him as being present especially in the little ones and the poor, so that they may be builders of a new world in which justice reigns, alongside solidarity and fraternity and peace.
