MESSAGGIO PER L’EPIFANIA 2025 AI MEMBRI DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI SUA ECCELLENZA REVERENDISSIMA MONS. ANTONINO RASPANTI, ECLJ, VESCOVO DI ACIREALE CAPPELLANO DEL GRAN BALIATO DI SICILIA

Cari Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

Nell’Epifania celebriamo la manifestazione della nascita di Gesù, che nel primo annuncio era stata svelata ai pastori dagli angeli. Ancora una volta è per iniziativa divina che si accede al Bambino e alla sua identità, velata nella carne. Adesso è la luce della stella che guida i cuori e le menti dei saggi.

Nel momento in cui il fatto misterioso è svelato in pubblico ed Erode apprende di questa ricerca del cuore umano, si apre l’avversione. “La luce risplende, ma le tenebre non l’hanno accolta”, riassumerà più tardi con un’affermazione lapidaria l’evangelista Giovanni.

È drammatico, ma è il dramma che segna la storia umana e Cristo lo assume in sé fino all’estrema conseguenza violenta del martirio. Egli rimane fedele testimone della Verità; e in un’apparente soccombere vince la malizia delle tenebre.

Per adesso è liberato per la guida della stella; da adulto, quando dovrà compiere la missione, sconfiggerà la follia omicida dell’invidia e della gelosia avanzando con una parola vera: Tu lo dici, io sono Re, ma il mio Regno non è di questo mondo.

A questo regno appartengono tutti coloro che non cedono alla menzogna, entrando nella schiera dei martiri. Persino i piccoli innocenti di ieri come di oggi.

MESSAGE FOR EPIPHANY 2025 TO THE MEMBERS OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF HIS REVEREND EXCELLENCY MONS. ANTONINO RASPANTI, ECLJ, BISHOP OF ACIREALE CHAPLAIN OF THE GRAND BALIATE OF SICILY

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem,

On Epiphany we celebrate the manifestation of Jesus' birth, which in the first announcement was revealed to the shepherds by the angels. Once again it is by divine initiative that we gain access to the Child and his identity, veiled in the flesh. Now it is the light of the star that guides the hearts and minds of the wise.

The moment the mysterious fact is revealed in public and Herod learns of this search of the human heart, aversion sets in. ‘The light shines, but the darkness has not received it’, the evangelist John later summarises in a lapidary statement.

It is dramatic, but it is the drama that marks human history and Christ takes it upon himself to the extreme violent consequence of martyrdom. He remains a faithful witness to the Truth; and in an apparent succumbing he overcomes the malice of darkness.

For now he is freed by the guidance of the star; as an adult, when he must fulfil his mission, he will defeat the murderous madness of envy and jealousy by advancing a true word: Thou sayest, I am King, but my Kingdom is not of this world.

To this kingdom belong all those who do not yield to the lie, entering the ranks of the martyrs. Even the little innocents of yesterday and today.
