UN FUTURO PER I CRISTIANI IN SIRIA

I cristiani considerano la Siria la culla della loro fede, oltre che il sito di numerosi spazi di carattere sacrale, quali chiese, monasteri e santuari. Damasco ospita il Patriarcato ortodosso di Antiochia e dell’Oriente sia per la Chiesa ortodossa siriaca che per quella greco-ortodossa, ed è inoltre la sede del Patriarcato cattolico di Antiochia, Alessandria e Gerusalemme per la denominazione greco-melchita.

Mentre la guerra continua ad infuriare in Siria, la migrazione al contagocce dei singoli cristiani in fuga si è trasformata in un esodo di massa. Il numero di cristiani in Siria, dal 30% della popolazione nel 1967, è sceso a meno del 10%, secondo le statistiche recenti.

Le gravi condizioni dei cristiani in Siria perdurano, e la continua minaccia alla loro esistenza è di enorme importanza per il Paese rispetto alla sua identità storica, al suo retaggio culturale e alla compagine della sua società. La Chiesa, e in senso più ampio il mondo, hanno la responsabilità morale e umana di impedire che la culla del cristianesimo svanisca completamente.

Il Gran Baliato di Sicilia dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme, nato nel periodo delle Crociate come Ordine Equestre Militare ed Ospedaliero cattolico e dalla fine del XIX secolo, divenuto poi ecumenico, posto sotto la protezione spirituale del Patriarca Greco Melchita di Antiochia, intende contribuire, insieme con la KAROL s.p.a., alla ricostruzione di un futuro per i cristiani e la loro classe dirigente in Siria.

Per questo motivo viene indetto un bando per studenti cristiani siriani – il cui testo è stato inviato al Patriarcato Melkita di Antiochia ed all’Apocrisario presso la Santa Sede – per consentire loro di studiare presso l’Università degli studi di Palermo, arricchendo anche l’interscambio umano e la conoscenza della società occidentale ed, una volta formatisi professionalmente, tornare nel loro paese di origine per consolidare una presenza cristiana qualificata ed al servizio dell’intera società civile.

CONTEST “A FUTURE FOR CHRISTIANS IN SYRIA”

Christians consider Syria to be the cradle of their faith, as well as the site of numerous sacred sites, such as churches, monasteries and shrines. Damascus is home to the Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and the East for both the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Greek Orthodox Church, and is also the seat of the Catholic Patriarchate of Antioch, Alexandria and Jerusalem for the Greek Melkite denomination.

As the war continues to rage in Syria, the dropper migration of individual Christians fleeing the country has turned into a mass exodus. The number of Christians in Syria, from 30% of the population in 1967, has fallen to less than 10%, according to recent statistics.

The serious conditions of Christians in Syria persist, and the continuing threat to their existence is of enormous importance for the country in terms of its historical identity, cultural heritage and the make-up of its society. The Church, and more broadly the world, has a moral and human responsibility to prevent the cradle of Christianity from vanishing completely.

The Grand Bailiwick of Sicily of the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, founded during the Crusades as a Catholic Equestrian Military and Hospitaller Order and since the late 19th century, then ecumenical, placed under the spiritual protection of the Greek Patriarch Melchite of Antioch, intends to contribute, together with KAROL s.p.a., to the reconstruction of a future for Christians and their ruling class in Syria.

For this reason, a contest is being launched for Syrian Christian students - the text of which has been sent to the Melkite Patriarchate of Antioch and to the Apocrisy at the Holy See - to enable them to study at the University of Palermo, enriching their human exchange and knowledge of Western society and, once professionally trained, to return to their country of origin to consolidate a qualified Christian presence at the service of the entire civil society.
