IL PAPA HA INCONTRATO LA DELEGAZIONE DEL PATRIARCATO DI COSTANTINOPOLI ARRIVATA A ROMA PER LA FESTA DEI SANTI PIETRO E PAOLO

“Il tradizionale scambio di delegazioni tra le due Chiese in occasione delle rispettive feste dei Santi Patroni è segno della profonda comunione già esistente tra noi e riflesso del vincolo di fraternità che unisce gli Apostoli Pietro e Andrea”. Lo ha ribadito stamane Papa Leone XIV ricevendo la Delegazione del Patriarcato di Costantinopoli arrivata a Roma la festa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo.

“Dopo secoli di disaccordi e incomprensioni – ha aggiunto - il riavvio di un autentico dialogo tra le Chiese sorelle di Roma e di Costantinopoli è stato possibile attraverso i coraggiosi e lungimiranti passi compiuti da Papa Paolo VI e dal Patriarca Ecumenico Atenagora. I loro venerati successori nelle Sedi di Roma e di Costantinopoli hanno continuato con convinzione nello stesso cammino di riconciliazione, rafforzando ulteriormente le nostre relazioni. Mentre ricordo con viva gratitudine il cammino compiuto fino ad ora, vi assicuro il mio intento di perseverare nello sforzo per ristabilire la piena comunione visibile tra le nostre Chiese”.

“Questa meta – ha sottolineato il Pontefice - si può raggiungere soltanto con l’aiuto di Dio, attraverso un continuo impegno di ascolto rispettoso e dialogo fraterno. Pertanto, sono aperto a qualunque suggerimento in merito, sempre consultando i miei confratelli Vescovi della Chiesa Cattolica che con me condividono, ciascuno nel suo proprio modo, la responsabilità per la piena e visibile unità della Chiesa”.

‘The traditional exchange of delegations between the two Churches on the occasion of the respective feasts of the Patron Saints is a sign of the deep communion already existing between us and a reflection of the bond of brotherhood that unites the Apostles Peter and Andrew’. This was reaffirmed this morning by Pope Leo XIV when he received the Delegation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople that arrived in Rome on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

‘After centuries of disagreements and misunderstandings,’ he added, "the restart of an authentic dialogue between the sister Churches of Rome and Constantinople was possible through the courageous and far-sighted steps taken by Pope Paul VI and Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras. Their venerable successors in the Sees of Rome and Constantinople have continued with conviction on the same path of reconciliation, further strengthening our relations. While I recall with lively gratitude the journey so far, I assure you of my intention to persevere in the effort to re-establish full visible communion between our Churches".

‘This goal,’ the Pontiff emphasised, "can only be reached with God's help, through a continuous commitment to respectful listening and fraternal dialogue. Therefore, I am open to any suggestion in this regard, always consulting my brother Bishops of the Catholic Church who share with me, each in his own way, the responsibility for the full and visible unity of the Church".
