ECUMENISMO, IL VESCOVO NIKITAS PRESIDENTE DELLA KEK. “MI IMPEGNO A COSTRUIRE PONTI”

Nel cammino verso l’Assemblea Ecumenica Europea, che dovrebbe portare ad un aggiornamento della Charta Oecumenica, molto si giocherà sulle relazioni personali. E allora non può che essere una coincidenza felice che sia il presidente del Consiglio delle Conferenze Episcopali Europee che quello della Conferenza delle Chiese Europee, conosciuto come KEK, siano entrambi guidati da presuli con le radici ben piantate in Europa, ma nati negli Stati Uniti.

All’elezione di Gintaras Grusas come presidente del CCEE nel 2021, si è aggiunta l’elezione dell’arcivescovo greco ortodosso Nikitas di Tyatheira e Gran Bretagna del Patriarcato ecumenico, che sostituisce il pastore protestante Krieger. Spetterà a Nikitas guidare dunque la KEK verso l’Assemblea Ecumenica Europea del 2026.

L’arcivescovo Nikitas è coordinatore della task force del Patriarcato ecumenico sulla tratta di esseri umani e la schiavitù moderna, è stato presidente del Comitato per i giovani del Patriarcato, nonché co-presidente e membro del comitato direttivo della Fondazione interreligiosa Elijah. Attualmente è co-presidente del Forum cattolico-ortodosso europeo. L’arcivescovo ha affermato di aver sempre creduto che essere cristiano significhi entrare in dialogo con altre persone e altre comunità cristiane. “Sì, certo che abbiamo le nostre differenze ma abbiamo così tanto in comune: Gesù Cristo - ha detto - Dobbiamo conoscerci; dobbiamo lavorare insieme”.

Nel suo discorso di accettazione ha sottolineato di volere “costruire ponti e relazioni”, e ha sottolineato di desiderare che le sue “relazioni fossero quelle dell’amore cristiano della verità e dell’onestà”.

La nomina è arrivata al culmine dell’Assemblea Generale della Conferenza delle Chiese Europee, che ha eletto anche i due nuovi vicepresidenti, i rev. Dagmar Winter e Frank Kopania. L’assemblea si è tenuta a Tallinn, in Estonia, dal 15 al 20 giugno. L’Assemblea ha visto anche uno spazio dedicato ai giovani, e ha riunito 300 persone rappresentanti di 114 Chiese anglicane, ortodosse e protestanti.

Tra i temi di discussione, la pace e la riconciliazione in Europa, con un particolare focus sull’Ucraina, dato anche dal fatto che la Chiesa Ortodossa Ucraina (la nuova autocefalia) è membro temporaneo della KEK.

On the way to the European Ecumenical Assembly, which should lead to an update of the Charta Oecumenica, much will play on personal relations. And so it can only be a happy coincidence that both the president of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences and that of the Conference of European Churches, known as KEK, are led by prelates with their roots firmly planted in Europe, but born in the United States.

The election of Gintaras Grusas as president of the CCEE in 2021 was accompanied by the election of Greek Orthodox Archbishop Nikitas of Tyatheira and Great Britain of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, who replaces Protestant Pastor Krieger. It will therefore be up to Nikits to lead the KEK towards the European Ecumenical Assembly in 2026.

Archbishop Nikitas is the coordinator of the Ecumenical Patriarchate's Task Force on Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery, a former chairman of the Patriarchate's Youth Committee, and co-chair and board member of the Elijah Interfaith Foundation. He is currently co-chair of the European Catholic-Orthodox Forum. The archbishop said he has always believed that being a Christian means entering into dialogue with other people and other Christian communities. "Yes, of course we have our differences, but we have so much in common: Jesus Christ," he said, "We have to get to know each other; we have to work together.

In his acceptance speech, he emphasised that he wanted to "build bridges and relationships, and stressed that he wanted his "relationships to be those of Christian love of truth and honesty".

The appointment came at the culmination of the General Assembly of the Conference of European Churches, which also elected the two new vice-presidents, Rev. Dagmar Winter and Frank Kopania. The assembly was held in Tallinn, Estonia, from 15 to 20 June. The Assembly also featured a youth section, and brought together 300 people representing 114 Anglican, Orthodox and Protestant Churches.

Among the topics of discussion were peace and reconciliation in Europe, with a particular focus on Ukraine, also given the fact that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (the new autocephaly) is a temporary member of KEK.
