MEDITAZIONE PER IL NATALE 2025 DEL MOLTO REVERENDO DAVID HAMID, ECLJ VESCOVO DELLA CHIESA D’IGHILTERRA CAPPELLANO DEL GRAN BALIATO DI SICILIA

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

A Natale ci viene ricordato che la nostra fede non è un'idea o una teoria, ma una realtà vissuta. Dio non è venuto a noi in modo astratto, ma nella carne, nato nella povertà, nell'incertezza e nel caos del mondo reale. Il bambino deposto in una mangiatoia ci mostra un Dio che sceglie l'intimità piuttosto che la distanza, la vulnerabilità piuttosto che il potere.

La storia di Maria, Giuseppe e del bambino Gesù non è un racconto distaccato dalla nostra vita; è una realtà radicata nell'esistenza quotidiana dell'umanità. Maria e Giuseppe hanno sopportato le difficoltà della vita - povertà, incertezza e sfollamento - quando hanno accolto il bambino Gesù in un umile presepe a Betlemme. Questa è l'essenza della nostra fede: Dio che si fa carne, scegliendo di stare con noi in intima presenza tra le gioie e i dolori dell'umanità.

Fu San Francesco d'Assisi a riconoscere la nascita di Gesù come un invito a testimoniare la vulnerabilità e l'amore incrollabile di Dio tra noi. Egli costruì il primo presepe natalizio, raffigurando l'umile scena della stalla di Betlemme per ricordarci la realtà in cui Dio è entrato. Il Verbo si è fatto carne per dimorare nel mondo così com'è realmente: una testimonianza della meraviglia dell'amore di Dio e della sua solidarietà con il suo amato popolo.

Il mistero del Natale parla direttamente alla nostra vocazione: come membri dell'Ordine, impegnati nel servizio caritativo e nell'assistenza, siamo chiamati, come la Beata Maria, ad accogliere Cristo che viene ad abitare con noi, e poi a riconoscerlo in coloro che sono malati, poveri, sfollati o dimenticati. Nel servirli, portiamo Cristo in un mondo ferito con coraggio e umiltà, e rendiamo testimonianza a Dio che entra nella sofferenza umana, non da lontano, ma dall'interno della stessa comunità umana.

Possa questo Natale rinnovare la nostra gioia, rafforzare la nostra fraternità e approfondire la nostra compassione, mentre continuiamo a servire Cristo presente nei più vulnerabili. Possa l'umiltà del presepe ispirarci ad atti di misericordia, fedeltà e speranza per tutto l'anno a venire.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem,

At Christmas we are reminded that our faith is not an idea or a theory, but a lived reality. God did not come to us in abstraction, but in the flesh—born into poverty, uncertainty, and the mess of the real world. The child laid in a manger shows us a God who chooses intimacy over distance, vulnerability over power.

The story of Mary, Joseph, and the child Jesus is not a narrative detached from our lives; it is a reality grounded in humanity’s day-to-day existence. Mary and Joseph endured the struggles of life—poverty, uncertainty, and displacement—when they welcomed the Christ child into a humble manger in Bethlehem. This is the essence of our faith: God becoming flesh, choosing to be with us in intimate presence amidst humanity's joys and sorrows.

It was St Francis of Assisi who recognized the birth of Jesus as an invitation to witness to God's vulnerability and unwavering love among us. He built the first Christmas crib, displaying the humble scene of the stable in Bethlehem to remind us of the reality God entered. The Word became flesh to dwell in the world as it truly is—a testament of the wonder of God’s love and solidarity with his beloved people.

The Christmas mystery speaks directly to our vocation: As members of the Order, committed to charitable service and care, we are called, like Blessed Mary, to welcome Christ who comes to dwell with us, and then to recognise him in those who are sick, poor, displaced, or forgotten. In serving them, we bear Christ into a wounded world with courage and humility, and bear witness to God who enters human suffering, not from afar, but from within human community itself.

May this Christmas renew our joy, strengthen our fraternity, and deepen our compassion, as we continue to serve Christ present in the most vulnerable. May the humility of the crib inspire us to acts of mercy, faithfulness, and hope throughout the year ahead.
