IL CARDINALE BALTAZAR ENRIQUE PORRAS CARDOZO GRAN CROCE DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME

Il Gran Maestro ha conferito la Gran Croce dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme al Cardinale Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo (Caracas, 10 ottobre 1944), arcivescovo cattolico venezuelano, dal 28 giugno 2024 arcivescovo emerito di Caracas.

Ha conseguito la laurea in teologia all'Università di Salamanca, in Spagna. Nel 1975 ottiene a Madrid il dottorato in teologia pastorale all'Istituto Superiore di Pastorale dell'Università di Salamanca. È ordinato sacerdote il 30 luglio 1967 da Miguel Antonio Salas Salas. Il 13 ottobre 2008 riceve dall'Università Cattolica Andrés Bello un dottorato honoris causa in storia.

Il 23 luglio 1983 è eletto vescovo ausiliare di Mérida. Il 17 settembre seguente riceve l'ordinazione episcopale ed il 30 ottobre 1991 diventa arcivescovo metropolita di Mérida.

È stato presidente della Conferenza episcopale venezuelana (CEV) dal 1999 al 2006. Oppositore del presidente venezuelano Hugo Chávez è stato oggetto di aggressioni verbali da parte di Chávez e dei suoi seguaci.

Il 9 ottobre 2016 papa Francesco ne annuncia la creazione a cardinale nel concistoro del 19 novembre, ricevendo il titolo presbiterale dei Santi Evangelista e Petronio. Il 14 gennaio 2017 lo stesso pontefice lo nomina membro della Pontificia commissione per l'America Latina.

Il 17 gennaio 2023 è nominato arcivescovo metropolita di Caracas.

Il 28 giugno 2024 papa Francesco accoglie la sua rinuncia al governo pastorale dell'arcidiocesi di Caracas per raggiunti limiti di età.

CARDINAL BALTAZAR ENRIQUE PORRAS CARDOZO GRAND CROSS OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

The Grand Master conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem on Cardinal Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo (Caracas, October 10, 1944), Venezuelan Catholic Archbishop, who will serve as Archbishop Emeritus of Caracas on June 28, 2024.

He earned a degree in theology from the University of Salamanca, Spain. In 1975, he obtained a doctorate in pastoral theology from the Higher Institute of Pastoral Care at the University of Salamanca in Madrid. He was ordained a priest on July 30, 1967, by Miguel Antonio Salas Salas. On October 13, 2008, he received an honorary doctorate in history from the Andrés Bello Catholic University.

On July 23, 1983, he was elected Auxiliary Bishop of Mérida. On September 17, he received episcopal ordination and on October 30, 1991, he became Metropolitan Archbishop of Mérida.

He served as president of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) from 1999 to 2006. An opponent of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, he was subjected to verbal abuse by Chávez and his followers.

On October 9, 2016, Pope Francis announced his creation as a cardinal in the consistory of November 19, receiving the presbyteral title of Saints Evangelista and Petronio. On January 14, 2017, the same pontiff appointed him a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

On January 17, 2023, he was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Caracas.

On June 28, 2024, Pope Francis accepted his resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Caracas upon reaching the age limit.
