IL MOLTO REVERENDO DAVID HAMID VESCOVO EMERITO DELLA DIOCESI IN EUROPA DELLA CHIESA D’INGHILTERRA AMMESSO NELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO

David Hamid (nato il 18 giugno 1955) è un vescovo anglicano in pensione con cittadinanza britannica e canadese. Dal 2002 è vescovo suffraganeo in Europa.

Hamid è nato il 18 giugno 1955 in Scozia, da genitori scozzesi e birmani. Ha la doppia cittadinanza britannica e canadese. Ha studiato alla Nelson High School di Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Ha studiato alla McMaster University, laureandosi con un Bachelor of Science (BSc) nel 1978. Si è poi iscritto al Trinity College di Toronto e si è laureato alla Toronto School of Theology con un Master of Divinity (M.Div.) nel 1981.

Hamid è stato ordinato diacono nella Chiesa anglicana del Canada nel giugno 1981 e sacerdote nel 1982. Dopo l'ordinazione è stato curato a St Christopher's, Burlington, Ontario, e poi rettore di St John's nella stessa città. In seguito, è stato coordinatore delle missioni per l'America Latina e i Caraibi della Chiesa anglicana del Canada e poi (ultimo incarico prima dell'ordinazione episcopale), direttore degli Affari ecumenici e degli studi della Comunione anglicana.

Il 17 ottobre 2002, nella Cattedrale di Southwark, è stato una delle ultime tre persone ad essere ordinate e consacrate vescovo da George Carey prima del suo ritiro da Arcivescovo di Canterbury, insieme a Richard Cheetham e David Hawkins. A partire dal 2023, è uno dei vescovi più longevi della Chiesa d'Inghilterra. È andato in pensione a partire dal 29 febbraio 2024 e da lui sono dipese per molti anni le parrocchie anglicane di Sicilia.

Hamid è sposato dal 1978 ed ha due figli.

David Hamid (born 18 June 1955) is a Anglican bishop with British and Canadian citizenship. He has been the Suffragan Bishop in Europe since 2002.

Hamid was born on 18 June 1955 in Scotland, to Scottish and Burmese parents. He holds dual British and Canadian citizenship. He was educated at Nelson High School in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. He studied at McMaster University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1978. He then matriculated into Trinity College, Toronto, and graduated from the Toronto School of Theology with a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree in 1981.

Hamid was ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada as a deacon in June 1981 and as a priest in 1982. After ordination he was curate at St Christopher's, Burlington, Ontario, and then rector of St John's in the same city. Following this he was mission co-ordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean for the Anglican Church of Canada and then (his last post before his ordination to the episcopate), the Director of Ecumenical Affairs and Studies of the Anglican Communion.

On 17 October 2002, in Southwark Cathedral, he was one of the last three people to be ordained and consecrated bishop by George Carey before his retirement as Archbishop of Canterbury, together with Richard Cheetham and David Hawkins. As of 2023, he is one of the longest-serving bishops in the Church of England. He retired on 29 February 2024 and the Anglican parishes of Sicily have depended on him for many years.

Hamid has been married since 1978 and they have two children.

The Most Reverend David Hamid will receive the investiture during the solemn rite that will take place during the week of prayer for Christian unity.
