MESSAGGIO DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIASTICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME PER LA SETTIMANA DI PREGHIERA PER L’UNITA’ DEI CRISTIANI

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine Militare di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme   

in occasione della Settimana di preghiera per l’unità dei cristiani di quest’anno viene offerto a tutti noi cristiani, appartenenti a varie Chiese, come spunto di meditazione il versetto: “In oriente abbiamo visto apparire la sua stella e siamo venuti qui per onorarlo” (Matteo 2, 2). 

La nascita di Cristo, si apre ad una dimensione cosmica e universale.

L’Incarnazione di Cristo e la Sua entrata nello spazio e nel tempo diventano l’occasione in cui angeli e uomini si uniscono in un’unica lode, gli abitanti di Betlemme si abbracciano con i Magi che provengono dal lontano oriente e tutti insieme offrono i loro i doni al Grande Visitatore.

Sin dall’inizio della Sua presenza sulla terra, Cristo apre le porte della fede a tutte le nazioni, invitandole ad adorare il Dio che si è fatto bambino per la nostra salvezza. Uomini di scienza, i Re Magi, obbediscono alla sua chiamata non contrapponendo la loro scienza alla loro fede. Sono molto lontani dalle nostre dispute che oppongono scienza e fede, creando due sfere dell'esperienza umana contrapposte o diversificate tra di loro, perché, forse, abbiamo dimenticato che l’una può diventare un valido aiuto e sostegno per l’altra e insieme collaborare per il bene comune.

La pandemia che ci ha afflitti ha invece mostrato che la fede e la scienza possono stare insieme e devono lavorare l’una accanto all’altra, offrendo sollievo ai mali spirituali e corporali che ci turbano. La stella conduce i Magi dall’oriente a Betlemme. Da un oriente così lontano e così vicino, allora come anche oggi. L’oriente descrive quella vasta area geografica che, agli occhi dell’uomo di oggi, da terra di fascino e sapienza è divenuta sinonimo di luoghi martoriati, ormai teatro di sofferenze, conflitti e guerre. 

Oggi l’oriente diventa la culla dove nasce l’Ecumenismo del Martirio. È quella terra che produce martiri che illuminano con i loro bagliori di luce il cielo spirituale dell’intera Chiesa di Cristo. È quella terra che porta alla nostra attenzione l’esempio di una fede viva che riesce a superare le differenze che dividono Cristo, unico fondamento della nostra fede. In questa Settimana, tutti i credenti in Cristo siamo invitati a pregare per la così tanto desiderata, ma così lacerata nei secoli, unità visibile della Chiesa.

Chiudendosi nella loro solitudine esistenziale, gli uomini e le donne di oggi si chiedono: ma che valore può avere la nostra preghiera davanti alle tante divisioni che strappano l’unica tunica di Cristo? Per poter capire e accettare chi è Colui che ci visita e al Quale rivolgiamo la preghiera, ciascuno di noi deve preparare il suo cuore alla a conversione di tutto il nostro essere, aprendoci alla preghiera comune all’unico Signore e all’accoglienza dei fratelli e delle sorelle bisognosi di aiuto ed in modo particolare impegnandoci a prenderci cura dei lebbrosi, secondo la tradizione del nostro Ordine, in occasione della 69° Giornata per i malati di lebbra che si celebra il prossimo 30 gennaio.

MESSAGE FROM THE ECCLESIASTICAL GRAND PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM FOR THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Military Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem   

On the occasion of this year's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, all of us Christians belonging to various Churches are offered the following verse as a starting point for meditation: "In the east we saw his star appear, and we came here to honour him" (Matthew 2, 2). 

The birth of Christ opens up to a cosmic and universal dimension.

The Incarnation of Christ and His entry into space and time become the occasion when angels and men unite in one praise, the inhabitants of Bethlehem embrace the Magi from the far east and all together offer their gifts to the Great Visitor.

From the very beginning of His presence on earth, Christ opened the doors of faith to all nations, inviting them to adore the God who became a child for our salvation. Men of science, the Wise Men, obey his call by not opposing their science to their faith. They are far removed from our disputes that pit science and faith against each other, creating two opposing or different spheres of human experience, because, perhaps, we have forgotten that one can become a valuable aid and support for the other and together work together for the common good.

Instead, the pandemic that has afflicted us has shown that faith and science can and must work together, offering relief to the spiritual and bodily ills that trouble us. The star leads the Magi from the east to Bethlehem. From an East so far and so near, then as now. The East describes that vast geographical area which, in the eyes of today's man, from a land of charm and wisdom has become synonymous with tortured places, now the scene of suffering, conflicts and wars. 

Today, the East becomes the cradle where the Ecumenism of Martyrdom is born. It is that land that produces martyrs who illuminate the spiritual sky of the entire Church of Christ with their glow of light. It is that land that brings to our attention the example of a living faith that succeeds in overcoming the differences that divide Christ, the only foundation of our faith. In this Week, all believers in Christ are invited to pray for the much desired, but so torn apart over the centuries, visible unity of the Church.

Enclosed in their existential solitude, men and women today ask themselves: what value can our prayer have in the face of so many divisions that tear the one tunic of Christ? In order to understand and accept who is the One who visits us and to whom we address our prayer, each one of us must prepare his or her heart for the conversion of our whole being, opening ourselves to common prayer to the one Lord and to the acceptance of brothers and sisters in need of help, and in a special way committing ourselves to care for lepers, according to the tradition of our Order, on the occasion of the 69th Day for Leprosy sufferers, which will be celebrated on 30 January.
