MESSAGGIO DI AVVENTO E NATALE 2025 DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIASTICO EMERITO

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme.

Alla fine del mio mandato di Gran Priore Ecclesiastico dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme desidero ringraziare sentitamente l’Eccellentissimo Gran Maestro Don Francisco de Borbòn, Graf Von Hardenberg e congratularmi con Sua Eccellenza Reverendissima il Vescovo Lindsay Goodall Urwin, OGS, nuovo Gran Priore Ecclesiastico del nostro Ordine, al quale assicuro il mio ricordo nella preghiera perché possa continuare a sostenere il Consiglio Spirituale dell’Ordine ed il Consiglio Ecumenico per favorire il dialogo e la fraternità tra le diverse Chiese e Confessioni cristiane.

Come Gran Priore Ecclesiastico Emerito voglio confermare a tutti i membri della Famiglia Lazzarita che, nei limiti delle mie possibilità e competenze e delle condizioni della mia salute, continuerò a dedicarmi al servizio spirituale ed ecumenico del nostro Ordine.

La fede professata 1700 anni fa nel Concilio di Nicea, che unisce tutti i cristiani in una professione comune di fede, ci spinge a continuare l’impegno di un ecumenismo spirituale dal basso.

In questo periodo di Avvento in preparazione del Natale desidero rivolgere a tutti i membri del nostro Ordine un messaggio augurale.

La vita di ciascuno di noi non attende un futuro incerto che ci riempie di inquietudine, ma l’Avvento di Cristo che ci riempie di speranza, le cui radici affondano nel cuore stesso di Dio.

La nostra non è solo attesa, ma anche memoria di uno che è già venuto nel mistero del Natale che ci apprestiamo a celebrare e certezza della presenza di Cristo che cammina con noi, al nostro fianco.

Il Natale non è un evento archeologico, nel quale commemoriamo la nascita di un personaggio del passato, ma è l’annunzio della nascita di un uomo nuovo che conosce l’origine della propria vita e cammina verso l’attuazione del suo destino di bellezza, di verità, di giustizia e di pace che trova in Cristo il suo fondamento.

Un nuovo mondo fondato sulla giustizia e sulla pace nascerà non tanto da operazioni militari imponenti e da accordi diplomatici ben orchestrati, ma dal culto dell'unico Dio da parte degli uomini e delle donne che decideranno di camminare nella luce della Parola del Signore riconoscendolo come l'unico Padre e fondando in questo modo la vera fraternità universale.

Quando l’uomo non si accorge di Dio, allora si fa buio nell’anima, un buio che non riescono a vincere le luci di mille lampadine colorate, l'oro e l'argento delle decorazioni natalizie, le note dei canti corali.

Gesù è l'unica luce capace di dissipare le tenebre del peccato, della solitudine, della disperazione. Con Gesù diventiamo figli della luce anche noi.

L'invito di San Paolo ad indossare “le armi della luce” (Rm 13,12) è l'invito a rivestirsi di Cristo per camminare in novità di vita. Le armi del credente sono: lo scudo della fede, l'elmo della speranza nella salvezza, la corazza della carità e della giustizia, la cintura della verità, i calzari dello zelo, la spada dello Spirito cioè la Parola di Dio (cfr.Ef. 6,13-17)

La nostra responsabilità nel mondo è essere riflesso della luce di Cristo nell’amore e nel servizio a Lui attraverso l’amore e il servizio agli uomini a coloro che incontriamo nei nostri percorsi quotidiani, nei luoghi in cui viviamo, perché possano conoscere quella luce che ha investito la nostra vita.

In questo periodo di violenze e di guerre, la città degli uomini raggiunta dall’annuncio del bambino Gesù, la cui nascita realizza la gloria di Dio e la pace fra gli uomini, deve ritrovare la sua armonia.

Tutti i membri dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro siamo chiamati ad accogliere e servire Gesù Cristo nei malati, nei lebbrosi, nei piccoli, nei poveri, negli emarginati.

Mentre mi compiaccio del Vostro impegno portato avanti con grande generosità favore dei lebbrosi e degli altri ammalati, in occasione delle prossime Feste Natalizie auguro a ciascuno di Voi e alle Vostre Famiglie, che ognuno accolga con fede nel suo cuore Gesù Cristo, e lo riconosca presente soprattutto nei piccoli e nei poveri, per essere costruttori di un mondo nuovo nel quale regni la giustizia, la solidarietà la fraternità e la pace.

ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2025 FROM THE EMERITUS ECCLESIASTICAL GRAND PRIOR

Dear Confreres and Consorrels of the Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem.

At the end of my term as Ecclesiastical Grand Prior of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to His Excellency Grand Master Don Francisco de Borbón Graf Von Hardenberg and congratulate His Excellency Bishop Lindsay Goodall Urwin, OGS, the new Ecclesiastical Grand Prior of our Order, whom I assure of my prayers so that he may continue to support the Spiritual Council of the Order and the Ecumenical Council in promoting dialogue and fraternity among the various Christian Churches and Confessions.

As Ecclesiastical Grand Prior Emeritus, I wish to confirm to all members of the Lazarite Family that, within the limits of my abilities and competence and the conditions of my health, I will continue to devote myself to the spiritual and ecumenical service of our Order.

The faith professed 1700 years ago at the Council of Nicaea, which unites all Christians in a common profession of faith, urges us to continue our commitment to spiritual ecumenism from the bottom up.

In this season of Advent, as we prepare for Christmas, I would like to extend my best wishes to all the members of our Order.

The life of each of us does not await an uncertain future that fills us with anxiety, but the Advent of Christ that fills us with hope, whose roots are sunk deep into the very heart of God.

Ours is not only expectation, but also memory of one who has already come in the mystery of Christmas that we are preparing to celebrate, and certainty of the presence of Christ who walks with us, at our side.

Christmas is not an archaeological event in which we commemorate the birth of a figure from the past, but rather the announcement of the birth of a new man who knows the origin of his life and walks toward the fulfillment of his destiny of beauty, truth, justice, and peace, which finds its foundation in Christ.

A new world based on justice and peace will be born not so much from impressive military operations and well-orchestrated diplomatic agreements, but from the worship of the one God by men and women who decide to walk in the light of the Word of the Lord, recognizing him as the only Father and thus establishing true universal brotherhood.

When man does not perceive God, darkness falls upon the soul, a darkness that cannot be overcome by the lights of a thousand colored bulbs, the gold and silver of Christmas decorations, or the notes of choral songs.

Jesus is the only light capable of dispelling the darkness of sin, loneliness, and despair. With Jesus, we too become children of light.

St. Paul's invitation to “put on the armor of light” (Rom 13:12) is an invitation to clothe ourselves in Christ in order to walk in newness of life. The weapons of the believer are: the shield of faith, the helmet of hope in salvation, the armor of charity and justice, the belt of truth, the shoes of zeal, and the sword of the Spirit, that is, the Word of God (cf. Eph 6:13-17).

Our responsibility in the world is to reflect the light of Christ in love and service to Him through love and service to others, to those we meet in our daily lives, in the places where we live, so that they may know the light that has illuminated our lives.

In this period of violence and war, the city of men reached by the announcement of the baby Jesus, whose birth brings about the glory of God and peace among men, must rediscover its harmony.

All members of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus are called to welcome and serve Jesus Christ in the sick, the lepers, the little ones, the poor, and the marginalized.

While I commend your generous commitment to lepers and other sick people, on the occasion of the upcoming Christmas holidays, I wish each of you and your families that everyone may welcome Jesus Christ into their hearts with faith and recognize him present above all in the little ones and the poor, so that you may be builders of a new world in which justice, solidarity, fraternity, and peace reign.
