MESSAGGIO DI PASQUA 2024 AI MEMBRI DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI SUA GRAZIA L’ARCIVESCOVO IAN ERNEST, ECLJ, RAPPRESENTANTE PRESSO LA SANTA SEDE DELL’ARCIVESCOVO DI CANTERBURY

L'"Alleluia" che cantiamo a Pasqua esprime la nostra gioia di sapere che la sofferenza e la morte non sono inevitabili. Sappiamo che la Bontà infinita è più potente della malvagità del male; crediamo che la vita sia più forte della morte; cantiamo la bellezza della vita indistruttibile.

In questo periodo di Quaresima al Centro anglicano abbiamo avuto il privilegio di avere riflessioni settimanali guidate da due giovani teologi, provenienti da diverse confessioni cristiane, che ci hanno aiutato a riconoscere che stiamo vivendo collettivamente e individualmente una "esperienza nel deserto", durante la quale è in gioco la nostra stessa identità. Questo viaggio nel deserto è stato determinante per l'incontro con Cristo, il Figlio di Dio, dal quale abbiamo recuperato la forza per continuare il viaggio della nostra vita con speranza, scoprendo una versione più vera di noi stessi.

Questo tempo di rinnovamento e di riscoperta di chi siamo, come seguaci di Gesù, ci ha infuso il coraggio di affrontare l'incertezza e la paura che, a volte, ci tormentano - soprattutto quando l'odio, la bruttezza, la sofferenza e la morte penetrano nella nostra vita quotidiana. Ma dopo aver affrontato le tenebre della Croce, noi che camminiamo sulle orme di Gesù possiamo ora vedere nella sua Risurrezione la vittoria della bontà e della bellezza. Qui a Roma, la contemplazione della bellezza attraverso l'arte, la scultura e l'architettura può essere affascinante. Non dovremmo perderla perché può essere non solo edificante e ispirante, ma anche in grado di elevare le nostre menti e i nostri cuori per trascendere i nostri orizzonti limitati.

Intuitivamente, siamo attratti da ciò che è buono e bello. Allo stesso modo, respingiamo ciò che è cattivo e brutto. Nella risurrezione di Cristo, l'infinita bontà e l'infinita bellezza si uniscono. È Dio, in Gesù risorto, che porta noi uomini e donne di tutte le generazioni nella sua gloria, nella sua grazia e nella sua gioia. Il Cristo risorto rimodella la nostra identità e, così, possiamo godere della bellezza, dell'armonia, dello splendore della pace e della dolcezza dell'amore.

EASTER MESSAGE 2024 TO THE MEMBERS OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF HIS GRACE ARCHBISHOP IAN ERNEST, ECLJ, REPRESENTATIVE TO THE HOLY SEE OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY

The "Alleluia" we sing on Easter expresses our joy of knowing that suffering and death are not inevitable. We know that infinite Goodness is more powerful than the wickedness of evil; we believe that life is stronger than death; we sing of the beauty of indestructible life.

Over this Lenten season at the Anglican Centre, we had the privilege of having weekly reflections led by two young theologians, coming from different Christian denominations, who helped us recognize that we are collectively and individually living a "wilderness experience", during which our very identities are at stake. This journey through the wilderness has been instrumental in encountering Christ, the Son of God from whom we have gained back our strength to continue our life's journey with hope as we discover a truer version of ourselves.

This time of renewal and rediscovery of who we are, as followers of Jesus, has instilled in us the courage to face the overwhelming uncertainty and fear that, at times, torment us - especially when hatred, ugliness, suffering and death penetrate our daily lives. But having faced the darkness of the Cross, we who walk in the footsteps of Jesus can now see in his Resurrection the victory of goodness and beauty. Here in Rome, the contemplation of beauty through art, sculpture and architecture can be fascinating. We should not miss it as it can be not only edifying and inspiring but can also raise our minds and hearts to transcend our limited horizons.

Intuitively, we are attracted to what is good and beautiful. Likewise, we repel what is evil and ugly. In the Resurrection of Christ, infinite goodness and infinite beauty are brought together. It is God, in the resurrected Jesus, who takes us men and women of all generations into his glory, his grace and his joy. The Risen Christ reshapes our identity and, thus, we can ultimately enjoy beauty, harmony, the splendour of peace and the sweetness of love.
