Il Papa emerito Benedetto XVI ha reso omaggio al metropolita ortodosso Damaskinos Papandreou nel decimo anniversario della sua morte.

In una lettera datata 11 ottobre, il papa emerito ha detto che sembrava "inconcepibile" che fosse passato un decennio dalla morte del metropolita Damaskinos Papandreou, il primo metropolita greco-ortodosso della Svizzera, nel 2011.

Benedetto XVI ha fatto il commento in un messaggio ad una conferenza tenuta in onore del metropolita il 5 novembre all'Università di Friburgo, in Svizzera.

Il metropolita Damaskinos, vescovo del Patriarcato ecumenico di Costantinopoli, è nato a Thermo, Grecia, il 23 febbraio 1936. È stato eletto primo metropolita della Svizzera nel 1982.

Autore di numerose opere sull'ecumenismo, è stato vescovo metropolita di Adrianopoli dal 2003 fino alla sua morte, avvenuta il 5 novembre 2011, all'età di 75 anni.

"Che siano già trascorsi 10 anni dalla morte del metropolita Damaskinos Papandreou di Svizzera è abbastanza inconcepibile per me", ha scritto il papa emerito nel suo messaggio, indirizzato al metropolita Maximos di Svizzera e al professor Stefanos Athanasiou.

La lettera è stata letta in un video messaggio alla conferenza dal cardinale Kurt Koch, il presidente svizzero del Pontificio Consiglio per la Promozione dell'Unità dei Cristiani.

Benedetto, che ha servito come papa dal 2005 al 2013, ha detto che è stato "un dono molto speciale della Provvidenza" che poco dopo essere stato nominato professore all'Università di Bonn, in Germania, nel 1959, due archimandriti ortodossi hanno iniziato a studiare presso le facoltà teologiche cattolica e protestante dell'università.

"Questo fu qualcosa di nuovo e inaspettato, perché fino ad allora gli studenti ortodossi non studiavano mai nelle facoltà cattoliche, ma esclusivamente in quelle protestanti e nella cosiddetta facoltà cattolica cristiana (= vetero cattolica) di Berna [Svizzera]", ha spiegato.

"Entrambi gli archimandriti sono diventati miei amici. Sfortunatamente, il mio amico Stylianos Harkianakis, che divenne poi Metropolita d'Australia, prese in seguito una posizione rigorosa che raffreddò la nostra amicizia", ha scritto il 94enne.

"L'amicizia con il metropolita Damaskinos Papandreou è cresciuta ancora di più per me, e quindi la tristezza per la sua morte troppo prematura".

"Ma il frutto di una vivace relazione interiore con l'Ortodossia è rimasto e continua a crescere nell'amicizia che mi unisce sempre più al Patriarca Ecumenico".

Benedict XVI paid tribute to Orthodox Metropolitan Damaskinos Papandreou on the tenth anniversary of his death

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI has paid tribute to an Orthodox leader on the 10th anniversary of his death.

In a letter dated Oct. 11, the retired German pope said it seemed “inconceivable” that a decade had passed since the death of Metropolitan Damaskinos Papandreou, the first Greek Orthodox metropolitan of Switzerland, in 2011.

Benedict XVI made the comment in a message to a conference held in the metropolitan’s honor on Nov. 5 at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Metropolitan Damaskinos, a bishop of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, was born in Thermo, Greece, on Feb. 23, 1936. He was elected as the first metropolitan of Switzerland in 1982.

The author of numerous works on ecumenism, he served as the metropolitan bishop of Adrianople from 2003 until his death on Nov. 5, 2011, at the age of 75.

“That 10 years have already passed since the death of Metropolitan Damaskinos Papandreou of Switzerland is quite inconceivable to me,” the pope emeritus wrote in his message, addressed to Metropolitan Maximos of Switzerland and Professor Stefanos Athanasiou.

The letter was read out in a video message to the conference by Cardinal Kurt Koch, the Swiss president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

Benedict, who served as pope from 2005 to 2013, said it was “a very special gift of Providence” that shortly after he was appointed a professor at the University of Bonn, Germany, in 1959, two Orthodox archimandrites began studying at the university’s Catholic and Protestant theological faculties.

“This was something new and unexpected, because until then Orthodox students never studied at Catholic faculties, but exclusively at the Protestant and the so-called Christian Catholic (= Old Catholic) faculty in Bern [Switzerland],” he explained.

“Both archimandrites became friends of mine. Unfortunately, my friend Stylianos Harkianakis, who later became Metropolitan of Australia, subsequently took a rigorous position that cooled our friendship,” the 94-year-old wrote.

“The friendship with Metropolitan Damaskinos Papandreou grew all the more for me, and thus the sadness over his all-too-early death.”

“But the fruit of a lively inner relationship with Orthodoxy has remained and continues to grow in the friendship that unites me more and more with the Ecumenical Patriarch.”
