L’ABATE NOTKER WOLF, ECLJ, ABATE PRIMATE EMERITO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN BENEDETTO E’ TORNATO ALLA CASA DEL PADRE

Notker Wolf OSB (21 giugno 1940 - 2 aprile 2024) è stato un monaco benedettino tedesco, sacerdote, abate, musicista e autore. È stato membro dell'Abbazia di St. Ottilien, in Baviera, Germania e nono abate primate della Confederazione benedettina dell'Ordine di San Benedetto dal 2000 al 2016.

Wolf ha iniziato la missione di monaco benedettino il 17 settembre 1962, ricevendo il nome di "Notker" in onore di San Notker. Ha poi iniziato gli studi filosofici a Roma, presso il Pontificio Ateneo Benedettino Sant'Anselmo. Nel 1965 ha iniziato gli studi presso l'Università Ludwig Maximilian di Monaco di Baviera, dove si è concentrato nei campi interdisciplinari della teologia, della filosofia e delle scienze naturali (zoologia, chimica inorganica e storia dell'astronomia). È stato ordinato sacerdote il 1° settembre 1968. Nel 1970, Wolf torna a Roma e viene nominato professore di filosofia naturale e filosofia della scienza presso il Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo. Nel 1974 ha conseguito il titolo di dottore in filosofia.

Il 7 settembre 2000, oltre 260 abati della Confederazione benedettina si sono riuniti a Roma e hanno eletto Wolf come 9° Abate Primate dell'Ordine di San Benedetto. La carica di Abate Primate fu creata da Papa Leone XIII nel 1886 per servire la comunità benedettina come collegamento con il Vaticano e le autorità civili, per promuovere l'unità tra i vari monasteri e congregazioni benedettine autonome e per rappresentare l'ordine nelle riunioni religiose in tutto il mondo.L'Abate Primate risiede nell'abbazia primaziale di Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino, a Roma, e funge da "Gran Cancelliere" del Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo. Con l'elezione dell'Abate Gregory Polan a nuovo Abate Primate, il 9 settembre 2016, Wolf ha completato sedici anni di servizio alla Confederazione benedettina.

Nel 2020 è entrato a far parte dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme nel Gran Baliato di Sicilia con il grado di Commendatore Ecclesiastico, impegnandosi attivamente nell’attuazione del carisma ecumenico dell’Ordine.

ABBOT NOTKER WOLF, ECLJ, ABBOT PRIMATE EMERITUS OF THE ORDER OF SAINT BENEDICT HAS RETURNED TO FATHER'S HOUSE

Notker Wolf OSB was a German Benedictine monk, priest, abbot, musician, and author. He was a member of St. Ottilien Archabbey located in Bavaria, Germany, which is part of the Benedictine Congregation of Saint Ottilien. He served as the ninth Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Confederation of the Order of Saint Benedict from 2000 to 2016.

Wolf began his mission as a Benedictine monk on 17 September 1962, and was given the name "Notker" in honor of Saint Notker. He then began his philosophical studies in Rome, at the Benedictine Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo. In 1965, he began studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich where he concentrated in the interdisciplinary fields of theology, philosophy, and natural sciences (zoology, inorganic chemistry, and the history of astronomy). He was ordained a priest on 1 September 1968 at St. Ottilien Archabbey. In 1970, Wolf returned to Rome and was appointed a professor of natural philosophy and philosophy of science at the Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo. In 1974, he achieved his doctor of philosophy degree from the same institution.

On 7 September 2000, over 260 of the abbots of the Benedictine Confederation gathered in Rome and elected Wolf as the 9th Abbot Primate of the Order of St. Benedict. The office of Abbot Primate was created by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 to serve the Benedictine community as its liaison to the Vatican and civil authorities, to promote unity among the various autonomous Benedictine monasteries and congregations, and to represent the order at religious gatherings around the globe. The Abbot Primate resides at the primatial abbey of Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino in Rome, as well as serves as the "Grand Chancellor" to the Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo. With the election of Abbot Gregory Polan as the new Abbot Primate on 9 September 2016, Wolf had completed sixteen years of service to the Benedictine Confederation.

In 2020, he joined the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem in the Grand Bailiwick of Sicily with the rank of Ecclesiastical Commander, actively engaging in the implementation of the Order's ecumenical charism.
