MEDITAZIONE PER LA QUARESIMA 2025 DEL VESCOVO DAVID HAMID, ECLJ VESCOVO SUFFRAGANEO EMERITO DELLA DIOCESI ANGLICANA DI GIBILTERRA IN EUROPA

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

Quando iniziamo la Quaresima, il mercoledì delle ceneri ci facciamo cospargere la fronte di cenere a forma di croce, con le agghiaccianti parole: “Ricordati che sei polvere e in polvere ritornerai!”. È anche un campanello d'allarme, che ci ricorda la fragilità della vita umana. 

Abbiamo bisogno di un promemoria così crudo? Non siamo già bombardati da immagini della fragilità umana, attraverso le scene di dolore e di violenza dei luoghi di conflitto, come Gaza o l'Ucraina? Perché avere un simbolo liturgico che ci ricordi la realtà del fallimento umano?

Amici, abbiamo questo segno liturgico perché ognuno di noi ha bisogno di ricordarsi personalmente di ciò che deve essere al centro della nostra vita. L'edificazione del regno di Dio inizia con l'impegno di ciascuno di noi a vivere i valori di Gesù Cristo. I 40 giorni di Quaresima sono il modo antico che la Chiesa offre a noi individui per aiutarci a rinnovare la nostra vita. Le nostre vite diventano facilmente confuse; nella nostra esistenza quotidiana dobbiamo bilanciare molte cose e fare molti tipi di compromessi. Durante l'anno, mentre facciamo delle scelte in un mondo molto complesso, è facile dimenticare i valori di Cristo nel cui corpo siamo stati innestati e di cui siamo seguaci. La Quaresima è quindi un po' come il controllo meccanico annuale dell'auto per assicurarsi che sia in grado di circolare, facendo tutte le regolazioni e le riparazioni necessarie per rimettere il veicolo in ordine. Noi cristiani effettuiamo questa revisione annuale attraverso le pratiche tradizionali del digiuno, dell'elemosina e dell'intensificazione della preghiera.

Le ceneri sulla fronte all'inizio di questo santo periodo di Quaresima ci ricordano che, come Adamo ed Eva, siamo stati creati dalla polvere del suolo. Siamo in questo mondo solo grazie a un Dio creatore che ci ama profondamente e che ci ha formati per essere i suoi amati figli. Sì, come i nostri genitori primordiali, anche i nostri corpi torneranno un giorno alla polvere del suolo. Ma il segno della croce sulla nostra fronte ci dice che, anche se siamo polvere, Dio ha una pretesa eterna su di noi che deriva dal nostro battesimo: apparteniamo a suo Figlio, siamo fratelli e sorelle di Gesù. La croce di Gesù Cristo ci apre la porta della vita eterna con il Padre.

Da quando esiste l'umanità, non siamo stati all'altezza di ciò che Dio desidera da noi. Le angosce del mondo testimoniano questo fallimento. In Cristo abbiamo la possibilità di invertire la rotta e di rimettere i nostri propositi in sintonia con quelli di Dio. San Paolo lo riassume in Romani (5.19): “Perché come per la disobbedienza di un solo uomo i molti sono stati fatti peccatori, così per l'obbedienza di un solo uomo i molti saranno fatti giusti”.

Cari amici, questo è il cuore della Buona Novella di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo: questa è l'intera missione di Gesù - rimettere in carreggiata l'intero genere umano che continua a fare scelte sbagliate. Gesù dà a tutti noi un nuovo punto di partenza per la nostra storia.

E così ogni anno abbiamo questi 40 giorni di Quaresima. Come individui ci viene data l'opportunità di andare nel deserto con Gesù, di avere la possibilità di rafforzare la nostra determinazione, di rifiutare il Vecchio Adamo e di abbracciare il Nuovo Adamo, il Cristo, e il nuovo inizio che Egli offre.

Così, la preghiera eucaristica della Chiesa d'Inghilterra in Quaresima include queste parole:

“In questi quaranta giorni ci conduci nel deserto del pentimento affinché, attraverso un pellegrinaggio di preghiera e disciplina, possiamo crescere nella grazia e imparare a essere di nuovo il tuo popolo”. Attraverso il digiuno, la preghiera e gli atti di servizio ci riconduci al tuo cuore generoso”.

Auguro a tutte le nostre sorelle e fratelli dell'Ordine di San Lazzaro una santa Quaresima. Che sia un tempo di ristoro personale per poter fare insieme la nostra parte nel riportare i valori del nostro Signore, l'amore, la giustizia e la pace, al centro del mondo che siamo chiamati a servire.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem,

As we begin Lent on Ash Wednesday, we have ashes rubbed in the shape of a cross into our foreheads, with the chilling words: “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return!” It is also a wakeup call, reminding us of the frailty of human life. 

Do we need such a stark reminder? Are we not already bombarded with images of human fragility, through the scenes of pain and violence from places of conflict, such as Gaza or Ukraine? Why have a liturgical symbol to remind us of reality of human failure?

Friends, we have this liturgical sign because each one of us needs personally to be reminded of what is to be at the centre of our lives. The building of the kingdom of God begins with each of us doing what we can to live the values of Jesus Christ. The 40 days of Lent is the ancient way that the Church offers to us as individuals to help us renew our lives. Our lives easily become confused; in our daily existence we must balance many things and make many kinds of compromises. Throughout the year as we make choices in a very complex world, it is easy to forget the values of Christ into whose Body we have been grafted and whose followers we are. So Lent is rather like the annual mechanical check-up on your car to make sure it is road-worthy, making all the adjustments and repairs needed to get the vehicle in order again. We Christians undertake this annual tune-up through the traditional practices of fasting, almsgiving, and intensification of prayer.

Ashes on our forehead as we begin this holy season of Lent remind us that, like Adam and Eve, we were made from the dust of the ground. We are in this world only because of a creator God who loves us deeply and who formed us to be his beloved children. Yes, like our primordial parents our bodies will also, one day, return to the dust of the ground. But the sign of the cross on our foreheads tells us that even though we are dust, God has an eternal claim on us which stems from our baptism: we belong to his Son, we are brothers and sisters of Jesus. The cross of Jesus Christ opens to us the gate to eternal life with the Father.

For as long as humanity has existed, we have fallen short of what God wishes of us. The distresses of the world bear witness to this failure. In Christ we have a chance to turn around and get our purposes back on track with the purposes of God. St Paul sums this up in Romans (5.19) “For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous”.

Dear friends, this is the heart of the Good News about our Lord Jesus Christ: this is the whole mission of Jesus – to put the entire human race that keeps making wrong choices back on track. Jesus gives us all a new starting point for our history.

And so each year we have these 40 days of Lent. As individuals we are given the opportunity to go into the wilderness with Jesus, to have a chance to strengthen our resolve, to reject the Old Adam and to embrace the New Adam, the Christ, and the fresh start which He offers.

So, the Church of England eucharistic prayer in Lent includes these words:

“In these forty days you lead us into the desert of repentance that through a pilgrimage of prayer and discipline we may grow in grace and learn to be your people once again. Through fasting, prayer and acts of service you bring us back to your generous heart.”

I wish all our sisters and brothers in the Order of St Lazarus a holy Lent. May it be a time of personal refreshment so that together we can play our part in bringing the values of our Lord, love, justice and peace, back into the centre of the world we are called to serve.
