MESSAGGIO PER LA QUARESIMA 2025 DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIATICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

La Quaresima ci ricorda che dobbiamo percorrere il cammino verso la Pasqua in modo convinto per giungere rinnovati nel corpo e nello spirito. La salvezza che Gesù Cristo è venuto a portare con la sua morte e risurrezione coinvolge tutte le nostre relazioni con Dio, con noi stessi, con il prossimo, con il creato. Il cammino verso la Pasqua ci chiama a restaurare il nostro volto e il nostro cuore di cristiani, tramite il pentimento, la conversione e il perdono, per vivere tutta la ricchezza della grazia del mistero pasquale.

In questa Quaresima con la preghiera il digiuno e la carità si deve vedere la gioia sui nostri volti, si deve sentire il profumo della libertà, si deve sprigionare quell’amore che fa nuove tutte le cose.

La preghiera, che esprime il nostro vero rapporto personale con il Padre, ci fa superare l’autosufficienza del nostro io, ci apre all’accoglienza della misericordia del Signore e all’ascolto dei bisogni del prossimo e dei gemiti del creato.

Il digiuno ci aiuta a cambiare il nostro atteggiamento verso il prossimo e le altre creature superando la tentazione di divorare tutto per saziare la nostra ingordigia.

L’elemosina oggi si rende concreta con opere di carità e di solidarietà, nella condivisione del nostro tempo e dei nostri beni con i fratelli.

Papa Francesco, al quale va la nostra preghiera e la nostra solidarietà per la sua salute, nel messaggio per la quaresima di quest’anno ha scritto:” Il motto del Giubileo “Pellegrini di speranza” fa pensare al lungo viaggio del popolo d’Israele verso la terra promessa, narrato nel libro dell’Esodo: il difficile cammino dalla schiavitù alla libertà, voluto e guidato dal Signore, che ama il suo popolo e sempre gli è fedele. Come cristiani siamo chiamati a camminare insieme, vincendo la tentazione di badare soltanto a noi stessi, per essere” tessitori di unità”, che vanno verso la stessa meta, verso la speranza che non delude (cfr. Rm 5,5) fondata sulla vittoria pasquale di Gesù Cristo sul peccato e sulla morte.

In quest’anno, nel quale ricorre il 1700° anniversario della comune professione di fede nel Concilio di Nicea e nel quale tutte le confessioni cristiane celebrano la Pasqua nella stessa data, il nostro Ordine sé chiamato a farsi portavoce del desiderio di unità fra tutti i cristiani e dell’aspirazione alla pace comune a tutta l'umanità.

Rivolgo un grato pensiero al Protettore Spirituale dell’Ordine Sua Beatitudine Youssel Absi, Patriarca melchita greco-cattolico di Antiochia, di Alessandria e di Gerusalemme e di tutto l’Oriente, a S.A.S. Don Francisco de Paula de Borbon y von Hardemberg –Fustemberg 50° Gran Maestro, ai Membri del Gran Consiglio Magistrale e del Consiglio Consultivo Spirituale e tutti i membri del nostro Ordine del cammino che abbiamo fatto insieme in questi anni, auguro un cammino quaresimale gioioso e ricco di frutti di conversione e di opere di misericordia,  assicuro la mia preghiera e la mia benedizione dal profondo del cuore.

MESSAGE FOR LENT 2025 OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL GRAND PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem,

Lent reminds us that we must walk the path to Easter with conviction in order to arrive renewed in body and spirit. The salvation that Jesus Christ came to bring with his death and resurrection involves all our relationships with God, with ourselves, with our neighbour, with creation. The journey towards Easter calls us to restore our face and heart as Christians, through repentance, conversion and forgiveness, to experience all the richness of the grace of the Easter mystery.

This Lent, through prayer, fasting and charity, we must see the joy on our faces, we must smell the fragrance of freedom, we must release that love that makes all things new.

Prayer, which expresses our true personal relationship with the Father, makes us overcome the self-sufficiency of our ego, opens us up to welcoming the Lord's mercy and listening to the needs of our neighbour and the groans of creation.

Fasting helps us change our attitude towards our neighbour and other creatures by overcoming the temptation to devour everything to satiate our gluttony.

Almsgiving today is made concrete with works of charity and solidarity, in sharing our time and goods with our brothers and sisters.

Pope Francis, to whom our prayers and solidarity for his health go, wrote in his message for Lent this year: ‘The motto of the Jubilee “Pilgrims of Hope” brings to mind the long journey of the people of Israel to the Promised Land, narrated in the book of Exodus: the difficult journey from slavery to freedom, desired and guided by the Lord, who loves his people and is always faithful to them. As Christians, we are called to walk together, overcoming the temptation to look after ourselves alone, to be ‘weavers of unity’, moving towards the same goal, towards the hope that does not disappoint (cf. Rom 5:5) founded on the Easter victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death.

In this year, which marks the 1700th anniversary of the common profession of faith at the Council of Nicaea and in which all the Christian denominations celebrate Easter on the same date, our Order is called to be the spokesman of the desire for unity among all Christians and the aspiration for peace common to all humanity.

I address my grateful thoughts to the Spiritual Protector of the Order His Beatitude Youssel Absi, Greek-Catholic Melkite Patriarch of Antioch, Alexandria and Jerusalem and of the entire East, to H.H. Don Francisco de Paula de Borbon y von Hardemberg -Fustemberg 50th Grand Master, to the Members of the Grand Magistral Council and of the Spiritual Advisory Council, and to all the members of our Order on the path we have travelled together in these years, I wish you a joyful Lenten journey, rich in fruits of conversion and works of mercy, I assure you of my prayers and my blessing from the bottom of my heart.
