MESSAGGIO DI NATALE 2022 DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIASTICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME

Confratelli e consorelle dell’Ordine Militare e Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

I mosaici della cattedrale di Monreale e della cappella palatina del palazzo reale di Palermo che raffigurano la Natività di Gesù si ispirano alle icone orientali. Il bambino all’interno di una grotta è deposto in una culla ed è avvolto in fasce come un defunto deposto nel sepolcro e avvolto in bende.

La fasciatura di Gesù appena nato richiama quella del suo corpo tolto dalla croce e preparato per essere sepolto in una grotta. Questo se da una parte indica la comunanza di destino di Gesù con ogni persona umana, la cui vita terrena si svolge dalla culla alla tomba, dall’altra parte richiama la totalità del Vangelo che ha il suo momento culminante nella risurrezione di Cristo nella quale si manifesta la sua divinità, che vince la morte. Dalla Pasqua si effonde sull’intera umanità e su tutto il creato la pace come dono di Dio.

Il Natale di Gesù Cristo, nel quale la gloria di Dio nei cieli si coniuga con la pace in terra per le persone che egli ama, ci dà la gioia di essere abbracciati da Dio e di volere bene a noi stessi e a tutti i nostri fratelli e sorelle. Il Figlio di Dio nasce come figlio della terra perché noi possiamo nascere come figli del cielo, destinati all’eternità.

Nel mistero del Natale cielo e terra sono uniti in una alleanza di amore come aveva preannunciato il profeta Isaia negli inni nei quali gli strumenti di guerra diventeranno strumenti di pace per coltivare la terra (Is.2,4) e gli animali fra loro ostili saranno rappacificati (Is.11,6-8) con l’arrivo dell’Emmanuele. Nella Bibbia il dono della pace è la pienezza dei beni messianici: la giustizia, la libertà, la salute, il benessere, la prosperità, la gioia, la pienezza della vita. Gesù, che è il "Principe della Pace"( Is. 9,5) e “la nostra Pace” (Ef. 2,14) è il mediatore della pace sorretta dalla speranza e vivificata dall’amore. La pace che ci lascia il Signore è ben diversa da quella che dà il mondo, basata sulla brama di potere politico ed economico, sull’orgoglio nazionale, sulla legge del più forte, sulla sopraffazione dei deboli. Non è la pace come assenza di conflitti, non è la pace che si fonda sul motto “se vuoi la pace prepara la guerra” o sull’altro “fecero il deserto e lo chiamarono pace”.   

La pace è una sfida che chiede di essere accolta giorno dopo giorno nelle dimensioni indissociabili di pace del cuore con sé stessi, la pace con gli altri nella famiglia, nella propria comunità, fra le nazioni e la pace con il creato. Chi desidera la pace non distrugge, ma crea ponti di solidarietà e di accoglienza.

In questo Natale vogliamo impegnarci a pregare perché cessi la spirale di violenza, il fragore delle armi in Ucraina e nelle altre parti del mondo, e si cominci a fare dei passi nella direzione di una pace fondata sulla giustizia che rinnovi la speranza.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2022 OF THE GRAND ECCLESIASTICAL PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

Confreres ad consoeurs of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem,

The mosaics of the cathedral of Monreale and of the palatine chapel of the royal palace of Palermo depicting the Nativity of Jesus are inspired by oriental icons. The child inside a cave is placed in a cradle and is wrapped in swaddling clothes like a deceased laid in the tomb and wrapped in bandages. The bandage of the newborn Jesus recalls that of his body removed from the cross and prepared to be buried in a cave. If on the one hand this indicates the commonality of Jesus' destiny with every human person, whose earthly life unfolds from the cradle to the grave, on the other hand it recalls the totality of the Gospel which has its culminating moment in the resurrection of Christ in which his divinity is manifested, which conquers death. From Easter, peace is poured out upon all humanity and upon all creation as a gift of God.

The Nativity of Jesus Christ, in which the glory of God in heaven is combined with peace on earth for the people he loves, gives us the joy of being embraced by God and of loving ourselves and all our brothers and sisters. The Son of God is born as a child of the earth so that we can be born as children of heaven, destined for eternity. In the mystery of Christmas, heaven and earth are united in a covenant of love as the prophet Isaiah had foretold in the prophesies in which the instruments of war will become instruments of peace to cultivate the earth (Is.2,4) and the hostile animals will be reconciled (Is.11,6-8) with the arrival of Emmanuel.

In the Bible the gift of peace is the fullness of messianic goods: justice, freedom, health, well-being, prosperity, joy, the fullness of life. Jesus, who is the "Prince of Peace" (Is. 9:6) and "our Peace" (Eph. 2:14), is the mediator of peace sustained by hope and enlivened by love. The peace that the Lord leaves us is very different from that which the world gives, based on the lust for political and economic power, on national pride, on the law of the strongest, on the oppression of the weak. It is not peace through the absence of conflicts; it is not peace that is based on the motto "if you want peace, prepare for war" or on the other "they made the desert and called it peace".   Peace is a challenge that needs to be accepted day after day in the inseparable dimensions of peace of heart with oneself, peace with others in the family, in one's own community, among nations and peace with creation. Those who desire peace do not destroy but create bridges of solidarity and acceptance.

This Christmas we should commit ourselves to pray for an end to the spiral of violence and the roar of arms in Ukraine and in other parts of the world, and for a beginning to take steps towards a peace based on justice that renews hope.
