MESSAGGIO DI NATALE 2024 AI MEMBRI DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI SUA GRAZIA L’ARCIVESCOVO IAN ERNEST, ECLJ, RAPPRESENTANTE PRESSO LA SANTA SEDE DELL’ARCIVESCOVO DI CANTERBURY

Cari fratelli e sorelle dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

Durante il periodo di Avvento, che inaugura un nuovo anno liturgico, abbiamo atteso Dio e ci siamo presi il tempo per essere attenti alla sua Parola.

Al contrario, nel periodo natalizio, ci vediamo correre dietro a cose che riteniamo gratificanti ed eccitanti. Ma molto presto impareremo che queste gioie immediate sono insufficienti per realizzare le nostre speranze di essere amati e considerati.

In modo molto diverso, il prologo del Vangelo di Giovanni, che viene letto il giorno di Natale, indica la strada per una vita di realizzazione.

Questa profonda riflessione o contemplazione dell'evangelista è suscitata dalla gioia per l'inizio della storia della salvezza. Ci porta a considerare le profondità del nostro essere, dove possiamo scegliere di accogliere il Verbo fatto carne: il Figlio di Dio fatto uomo.

Fin dall'inizio, il Vangelo di Giovanni ci sfida perché abbiamo questo enorme potere di accogliere o negare la presenza di Dio nella nostra vita. A causa della libertà che abbiamo, siamo chiamati a essere vigili nelle nostre scelte. Mentre tutti cerchiamo una vita di realizzazione, abbiamo sempre la responsabilità di abbracciare quotidianamente la presenza viva e liberante di Dio, poiché ci viene offerta la gioia di diventare figli di Dio da Gesù, il Figlio di Dio.

Il Natale ci ricorda che nell'unità con Cristo non siamo abbandonati a noi stessi e che come figli di un Padre amorevole veniamo a sapere chi siamo e cosa dobbiamo fare.

Avendo trascorso cinque anni a Roma per approfondire i legami di affetto tra fratelli e sorelle cristiani di diverse confessioni, ho imparato che lo spirito del Natale deve penetrare nei nostri cuori perché ci permetterà di mettere le nostre paure e la nostra impotenza davanti a Dio.

Pertanto, il Verbo incarnato di Dio è un dono per ciascuno di noi, poiché alimenta in noi l'intenso desiderio di agire come figli di Dio con il potenziale di diventare costruttori di pace e di ponti nel nostro mondo spezzato e diviso.

Che la gioia del Natale riempia i vostri cuori e le vostre anime.

Con queste parole, auguro a voi, alle vostre famiglie e alle vostre rispettive comunità una celebrazione benedetta del Natale e un anno fruttuoso per il 2025.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2024 TO THE MEMBERS OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF HIS GRACE ARCHBISHOP IAN ERNEST, ECLJ, REPRESENTATIVE TO THE HOLY SEE OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY

Dear Brother and Sister of the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem,

During the Advent season which inaugurates a new liturgical year, we have been waiting upon God and taking the time to be attentive to His Word.

In contrast, at Christmas time, we see ourselves running after things that we think are rewarding and exciting. But very soon we will learn that these immediate joys are insufficient to realize our hopes to be loved and considered.

In a very different way, the prologue of the Gospel of John which is read on Christmas day indicates the way to a life of fulfilment.

This deep reflection or contemplation of the evangelist is stirred by joy at the very beginning of the story of Salvation. It leads us to consider the depths of our being, where we can choose to welcome the Word made flesh: the Son of God made man.

From the very beginning, John's Gospel challenges us as we have this tremendous power to welcome or deny the presence of God in our lives. Because of the liberty we have, we are called to be vigilant in our choices. As we all look for a life of fulfilment we always have the responsibility to daily embrace the living and liberating presence of God as we are offered the joy of becoming children of God by Jesus, the Son of God.

Christmas reminds us that in unity with Christ we are not left on our own and as children of a loving Father we come to know who we are and what we have to do.

Having spent five years in Rome to further the bonds of affection amongst christian brothers and sisters from different denominations, I have come to learn that the spirit of the Christmas season should penetrate our hearts as it will enable us to place our fears and helplessness in God's sight.

Therefore, the Incarnate Word of God is a gift to each of us as it nurtures in us the intense desire to act as children of God bearing the potential of becoming peace makers and bridge builders in our broken and divided world.

May the joy that Christmas brings fill your hearts and souls.

With these words, I wish you, your family and your respective communities a most blessed celebration at Christmas and a fruitful year 2025.
