MESSAGGIO PASQUALE 2025 DEL GRAN BALI’ DI SICILIA

Cari Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

La Pasqua 2025 segna un passaggio epocale per l’intera cristianità: non solo essa viene celebrata nella stesso giorno dalle chiese latine e da quelle ortodosse (evento non certo frequente), ma ciò avviene nell’anno in cui, il prossimo 20 maggio, il mondo cristiano farà memoria dei 1700 anni dall’apertura del primo Concilio ecumenico svoltosi a Nicea nel 325, passato alla storia principalmente per il Simbolo che raccoglie, definisce e proclama la fede nella salvezza in Gesù Cristo e nel Dio Uno, Padre, Figlio e Spirito Santo. Completato poi dal Concilio di Costantinopoli del 381, il Credo di Nicea è divenuto nella pratica la carta d’identità della fede professata dalla Chiesa.

Questo evento è particolarmente ricco di significato per il nostro Ordine che, ormai da più di un secolo, ha fatto della vocazione ecumenica la propria principale caratteristica accanto a quella del servizio verso gli ultimi, verso coloro che, scartati dalla società del consumo, sono però il vero fondamento, la pietra angolare della civitas Dei.

Continuiamo ad impegnarci “ut unum sint”, a cancellare lo scandalo delle divisioni, per essere testimonianza vivente dell’unico e vero Dio.

La Pasqua, poi, è una festa in primavera. Si tratta di una celebrazione della vita. Dio dà nuova vita alla natura. Ma è anche il nostro Redentore che dà nuova vita attraverso il suo Figlio. Non solo la morsa dell'inverno, ma anche il potere della morte è finito. “O morte, dov'è la tua vittoria? O morte, dov'è il tuo pungiglione?” (1 Cor. 15,55).

Il messaggio di Pasqua è più che mai necessario nel nostro tempo. Papa Benedetto XVI, di venerata memoria, ha descritto la situazione in Europa come una ‘cultura della morte’. Troppi hanno perso la speranza non solo per il futuro terreno, ma ancora di più nella possibilità di vita eterna. I cavalieri di San Lazzaro nel loro tempo e nella loro strada hanno sempre combattuto per l'annuncio del Vangelo di Cristo risorto e per la difesa della fede cristiana. Ora è il momento per una nuova crociata spirituale contro tutte quelle idee moderne che privano gli uomini della loro speranza, contro quella che Papa Francesco ha definito la “cultura dello scarto”

EASTER MESSAGE 2025 OF THE GREAT BAILIFF OF SICILY

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem,

Easter 2025 marks an epochal passage for the whole of Christianity: Not only is it celebrated on the same day by the Latin and Orthodox Churches (an event that is certainly not frequent), but it takes place in the year in which, on 20 May next, the Christian world will commemorate the 1700th anniversary of the opening of the first Ecumenical Council held in Nicaea in 325, which went down in history mainly for the Symbol that gathers, defines and proclaims the faith in salvation in Jesus Christ and in the One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Later completed by the Council of Constantinople in 381, the Nicene Creed became in practice the identity card of the professed faith of the Church.

This event is particularly rich in meaning for our Order which, for more than a century now, has made the ecumenical vocation its main feature alongside that of service to the least, to those who, discarded by the consumer society, are the true foundation, the cornerstone of the civitas Dei.

Let us continue to commit ourselves ‘ut unum sint’, to erase the scandal of divisions, to be a living witness to the one and only true God.

Easter, then, is a spring festival. It is a celebration of life. God gives new life to nature. But it is also our Redeemer who gives new life through his Son. Not only the grip of winter, but also the power of death is ended. "O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?" (1 Cor. 15:55).

The message of Easter is more necessary than ever in our time. Pope Benedict XVI, of venerable memory, described the situation in Europe as a “culture of death”. Too many have lost hope not only for the earthly future, but even more in the possibility of eternal life. The Knights of St Lazarus in their time and on their way have always fought for the proclamation of the Gospel of the risen Christ and the defence of the Christian faith. Now is the time for a new spiritual crusade against all those modern ideas that deprive people of their hope, against what Pope Francis has called the ‘culture of discarding’

May the Easter proclamation resound among you and your families: Christ is risen! Alleluja! Happy Easter!
