Il 15 novembre nell'antica Basilica Papale di San Paolo fuori le Mura a Roma, ha avuto luogo la presentazione di una collana, parte di una serie in più volumi, intitolata "Le Chiese del Novecento e la Santa Sede per la pace. Storia e diplomazia nell'Europa centrale e orientale".

La pubblicazione è a cura della Pontificia Università Gregoriana e della Facoltà di Storia e Beni Culturali. Gli autori sono dieci professori selezionati provenienti da Europa, America e Canada, tra cui il teologo e diplomatico ecclesiastico bulgaro Rev.mo il Prof. Dr. Ivan Ivanov (Kyumurdzhiyski). I ricercatori hanno avuto il compito scientifico di studiare e pubblicare in Vaticano le loro ricerche degli ultimi cinque anni, dedicate alla diplomazia ecclesiastica, al dialogo interconfessionale e interreligioso in Oriente e in Occidente, con testimonianze oggettive, storiche e personali, d'archivio. La prefazione alla pubblicazione è di Sua Eminenza il Card. James Harvey. Il curatore è Mons. Prof. Jan Mikrut, famoso storico, teologo e diplomatico polacco.

Padre Prof. Ivan Ivanov ha contribuito allo studio con un argomento interessante e importante per le relazioni intraecclesiali contemporanee: "I pontificati papali di Giovanni XXIII e Giovanni Paolo II e la loro influenza sulla cooperazione pacifica con la Chiesa ortodossa bulgara".

Questo studio esamina diverse analisi del pontificato di Papa Giovanni XXIII e Papa Giovanni Paolo II e del loro rapporto con la Chiesa ortodossa bulgara attraverso lo studio di prove storiche e interpretazioni teologiche. Non esiste un Papa di origine bulgara, ma Giovanni XXIII è considerato il "Papa bulgaro": Mons. Roncalli rimase per sempre con questo soprannome per il suo proverbiale amore per il popolo bulgaro fin dagli anni della sua missione come diplomatico inviato dalla Santa Sede in Bulgaria. Probabilmente molte delle idee che furono poi introdotte nel Concilio Vaticano II - e in particolare: l'idea di cooperazione tra cristiani e un ritorno ai principi della fede della Chiesa antica, il riconoscimento reciproco tra cristiani d'Oriente e d'Occidente e i diritti umani - nacquero durante i suoi anni come delegato apostolico a Sofia, e furono poi sviluppate durante i suoi anni successivi a Istanbul e in Grecia. Papa Giovanni XXIII ebbe l'esperienza di vivere la sua appartenenza religiosa con fedeltà alla propria tradizione, ma anche nel pieno rispetto della tradizione dell'altro, ovvero quella ortodossa. L'opera di Mons. Roncalli, le sue opinioni sulla pace nel mondo e sulla fratellanza pacifica tra i popoli Sono queste le motivazioni principali su cui Papa Giovanni Paolo II e Papa Francesco hanno poi costruito le loro visite in Bulgaria nel 2002 e nel 2019, ricordando così l'importante opera del "Papa bulgaro".

Come partecipante diretto a questo processo ecclesiale e diplomatico di preparazione e attuazione delle visite apostoliche e come traduttore ufficiale durante la visita di Papa Giovanni XXIII e Papa Giovanni Paolo II al territorio della Chiesa ortodossa bulgara, al Palazzo Sinodale e alla Chiesa cattolica di Sant'Alexander Nevsky, l'autore esamina le azioni del diplomatico Roncalli e il suo ruolo per la pace nel mondo, e di Wojtyla con uno sguardo agli ex paesi socialisti del periodo della "cortina di ferro", e più specificamente alla Bulgaria e alle sue relazioni con la Santa Sede. Sulla base di documenti d'archivio, lettere e testimonianze oggettive, analizza la diplomazia statale ed ecclesiastica in questo ambito. Vengono esaminati il viaggio apostolico di Papa Giovanni Paolo II in Bulgaria (2002) e la partecipazione della Chiesa ortodossa bulgara e dei suoi alti rappresentanti a questi importanti eventi per la Bulgaria.

I pontificati di Papa Giovanni XXIII e Papa Giovanni Paolo II rappresentano due periodi significativi nella storia della Chiesa cattolica e della sua interazione con la Chiesa ortodossa bulgara. Essi mostrano come il dialogo e la comprensione reciproca e il rispetto possono costruire ponti tra le tradizioni cristiane d'Oriente e d'Occidente. Le loro parole e le loro azioni sono fonte di ispirazione per la futura unità dei cristiani e ci ricordano che fede, fratellanza e dialogo sono le chiavi per superare ogni divisione. 

REV.MO PROF. DR. IVAN IVANOV, CHLJ AMONG THE AUTHORS OF THE SERIES ‘THE CHURCHES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AND THE HOLY SEE FOR PEACE. HISTORY AND DIPLOMACY IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE’

On 15 November, in the ancient Papal Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, a series of books entitled ‘The Churches of the Twentieth Century and the Holy See for Peace. History and Diplomacy in Central and Eastern Europe’ was presented.

The publication is edited by the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Faculty of History and Cultural Heritage. The authors are ten selected professors from Europe, America, and Canada, including the Bulgarian theologian and ecclesiastical diplomat Rev. Prof. Dr. Ivan Ivanov (Kyumurdzhiyski). The researchers were given the scientific task of studying and publishing in the Vatican their research from the last five years, dedicated to ecclesiastical diplomacy and interfaith and interreligious dialogue in the East and West, with objective, historical and personal archival evidence. The preface to the publication is by His Eminence Cardinal James Harvey. The editor is Monsignor Prof. Jan Mikrut, a renowned Polish historian, theologian and diplomat.

Father Prof. Ivan Ivanov contributed to the study with an interesting and important topic for contemporary intra-ecclesial relations: “The papal pontificates of John XXIII and John Paul II and their influence on peaceful cooperation with the Bulgarian Orthodox Church”.

This study examines various analyses of the pontificates of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II and their relationship with the Bulgarian Orthodox Church through the study of historical evidence and theological interpretations. There is no Pope of Bulgarian origin, but John XXIII is considered the “Bulgarian Pope”: Monsignor Roncalli was forever known by this nickname because of his proverbial love for the Bulgarian people since the years of his mission as a diplomat sent by the Holy See to Bulgaria. Many of the ideas that were later introduced at the Second Vatican Council - in particular, the idea of cooperation between Christians and a return to the principles of the faith of the early Church, mutual recognition between Eastern and Western Christians, and human rights - probably originated during his years as apostolic delegate in Sofia and were then developed during his subsequent years in Istanbul and Greece. Pope John XXIII had the experience of living his religious affiliation with fidelity to his own tradition, but also with full respect for the tradition of the other, namely the Orthodox tradition. The work of Monsignor Roncalli, his views on world peace and peaceful brotherhood among peoples These are the main reasons why Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis then built their visits to Bulgaria in 2002 and 2019, thus commemorating the important work of the “Bulgarian Pope”.

As a direct participant in this ecclesial and diplomatic process of preparing and implementing apostolic visits, and as an official translator during the visits of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II to the territory of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, to the Synodal Palace and to the Catholic Church of St. Alexander Nevsky, the author examines the actions of the diplomat Roncalli and his role in world peace, and those of Wojtyla with a look at the former socialist countries of the “Iron Curtain” period, and more specifically at Bulgaria and its relations with the Holy See. Based on archival documents, letters and objective testimonies, he analyses state and ecclesiastical diplomacy in this area. Pope John Paul II's apostolic journey to Bulgaria (2002) and the participation of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and its high representatives in these important events for Bulgaria are examined.

The pontificates of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II represent two significant periods in the history of the Catholic Church and its interaction with the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. They show how dialogue, mutual understanding and respect can build bridges between the Christian traditions of East and West. Their words and actions are a source of inspiration for the future unity of Christians and remind us that faith, brotherhood and dialogue are the keys to overcoming all divisions.
