MESSAGGIO PER LA SETTIMANA SANTA 2025 DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIATICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine Militare ed Ospedaliero di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

Quest’anno la Pasqua, che racchiude l’essenza del messaggio evangelico e che genera la speranza cristiana, per una provvidenziale coincidenza astronomica, viene celebrata da tutte le confessioni cristiane nella medesima domenica: il prossimo 20 aprile, grazie alla concordanza tra i calendari giuliano (usato dalle Chiese ortodosse e dalle Antiche Chiese orientali) e gregoriano (seguito dalla Chiesa cattolica e dalle Chiese e Denominazioni nate dalla Riforma).

Il Concilio di Nicea, di cui quest’anno celebriamo il 1700° anniversario, oltre ad approvare una professione di fede comune, diede il lieto annuncio dell’unità ristabilita fra le varie Chiese intorno alla festa di Pasqua.

Papa Francesco il 25 gennaio scorso, a conclusione della Settimana di preghiere per l’Unità dei cristiani, ha detto:” L’anniversario del Concilio di Nicea non deve essere celebrato solo come memoria storica, ma anche come impegno a testimoniare la crescente comunione tra di noi. Dobbiamo fare in modo di non lasciarcela sfuggire, di costruire legami solidi, di coltivare l’amicizia reciproca, di essere tessitori di comunione e di fraternità. […]. Rinnovo il mio appello affinché questa coincidenza serva da richiamo a tutti i cristiani a compiere un passo decisivo verso l’unità, intorno a una data comune per la Pasqua; e la Chiesa Cattolica è disposta ad accettare la data che tutti vogliono fare: una data dell’unità”.

Il nostro Ordine, caratterizzato dalla vocazione ecumenica, auspica che una data comune per la Pasqua avrebbe un valore simbolico, in un mondo che ha bisogno di unità.

La celebrazione congiunta della Pasqua nel 2025 deve offrire l’opportunità per rimettere la Resurrezione di Cristo, la cui luce d’amore squarcia le tenebre del mondo intriso spesso di odio e violenza, al centro della confessione di fede che coinvolge tutti i cristiani.

Lasciamoci rinnovare dalla certezza della misericordia di Dio, perché come un fiume possa irrigare i deserti del nostro mondo e trasformarci in messaggeri di misericordia, impegnati ad essere vicini ad ogni persona che soffre nel corpo o nello spirito.

Auguro che la luce pasquale illumini la vita di ogni membro dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro, per contribuire a costruire una casa comune che ha come pietra angolare Cristo Risorto e come “pietre vive” ognuno di noi, chiamato a portare la speranza di una vita nuova a tutta l’umanità.

MESSAGE FOR HOLY WEEK 2025 FROM THE ECCLESIATIC GRAND PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem,

This year Easter, which encapsulates the essence of the Gospel message and generates Christian hope, by a providential astronomical coincidence, is celebrated by all Christian denominations on the same Sunday: 20 April next year, thanks to the concordance between the Julian calendar (used by the Orthodox Churches and the Old Oriental Churches) and the Gregorian calendar (followed by the Catholic Church and the Churches and Denominations born from the Reformation).

The Council of Nicaea, whose 1700th anniversary we are celebrating this year, not only approved a common profession of faith, but also gave the joyful announcement of the unity re-established among the various Churches around the feast of Easter.

Pope Francis said on 25 January, at the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: ‘The anniversary of the Council of Nicaea should not only be celebrated as a historical memory, but also as a commitment to bear witness to the growing communion between us. We must ensure that we do not let it slip away, that we build solid bonds, cultivate mutual friendship, be weavers of communion and fraternity. [...]. I renew my appeal for this coincidence to serve as a call to all Christians to take a decisive step towards unity, around a common date for Easter; and the Catholic Church is willing to accept the date that everyone wants to make: a date of unity’.

Our Order, characterised by its ecumenical vocation, hopes that a common date for Easter would be of symbolic value in a world in need of unity.

The joint celebration of Easter in 2025 must offer the opportunity to put the Resurrection of Christ, whose light of love pierces the darkness of a world often steeped in hatred and violence, at the centre of the confession of faith involving all Christians.

Let us be renewed by the certainty of God's mercy, so that like a river it may irrigate the deserts of our world and transform us into messengers of mercy, committed to being close to every person suffering in body or spirit.

I wish that the Easter light may illuminate the life of every member of the Order of St Lazarus, to help build a common house that has as its cornerstone the Risen Christ and as ‘living stones’ each one of us, called to bring the hope of a new life to all humanity.
