Sua Beatitudine Youssef Absi, Patriarca di Antiochia, di tutto l’Oriente, di Alessandria e di Gerusalemme, Patriarca Protettore dell’Ordine Equestre e Militare di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme, ha presieduto il rito di benedizione e saluto dei patriarchi delle chiese orientali cattoliche durante i funerali del Sommo Pontefice Francesco.

Il rito orientale di saluto, che ha accompagnato il feretro di Papa Francesco, si inserisce all'interno della celebrazione solenne delle esequie. Le Chiese orientali, rappresentate dai loro vertici, hanno offerto un saluto specifico, che si distingue per l'uso della lingua greca e la preghiera tratta dalla liturgia bizantina dei defunti.

La preghiera recitata dai patriarchi chiede a Dio di concedere il riposo all'anima del Papa e di condurla alla vita beata. Uno dei patriarchi ha poi incensato il feretro, un gesto che simboleggia la purezza e la spiritualità dell'anima del defunto.

Questo rito, che ha avuto un momento di particolare rilevanza nel corso della messa esequiale, è un'espressione della fede e della comunione tra le diverse Chiese, testimoniando la forza e la ricchezza della tradizione cristiana.

His Beatitude Youssef Absi, Patriarch of Antioch, All the East, Alexandria and Jerusalem, Patriarch Protector of the Equestrian and Military Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, presided over the rite of blessing and greeting of the Patriarchs of the Eastern Catholic Churches during the funeral of the Supreme Pontiff Francis.

The Eastern rite of greeting, which accompanied the coffin of Pope Francis, was part of the solemn celebration of the funeral. The Eastern Churches, represented by their leaders, offered a specific greeting, distinguished by the use of the Greek language and the prayer taken from the Byzantine liturgy of the dead.

The prayer recited by the patriarchs asks God to grant rest to the Pope's soul and lead it to blessed life. One of the patriarchs then incensed the coffin, a gesture symbolising the purity and spirituality of the soul of the deceased.

This rite, which had a special moment during the funeral Mass, is an expression of the faith and communion between the different Churches, testifying to the strength and richness of the Christian tradition.
